Dave,
I was thinking it was right around 2 inches...In order to make that work, your going to have to stretch that frame 2 1/2" between the rear cab mounts and the rear axle. I don't know anything about stretching a frame, but it may be easier to get the correct frame to begin with.
I wonder what your neighbor would want for the one he has in the pasture?

I know that one of our Oklahoma members has done this on her '78 F150. Her handle is 1978FordTruckGirl. You might want to drop her a line. She and her husband did an amazing job shortning their bed. Her truck is show quality and they do show it. She had it in the recent Mid-America Shelby Show a couple weeks ago.
thanks for all the help and info guys. hopefully i will be started on this before too long and can let you know how it is going. and the reason i want to shorten the frame and put a short bed on it is that i bought the truck without a bed and thought it was a short bed frame. then i bought a short bed to go on it. when i put the bed on the truck i was in for a suprise. well i also have a 79 f-250 that has a long bed on it but the thing is in such bad shape i think it will be easier for me to just shorten the frame. plus like what was mentioned before if i want to go off road it will be helpfull. and as for being a work truck the company that i am partners in has a 79 f-350 dually with a 14 foot flat bed that i can use if a need a work truck so this is going to be my fun truck.
i am not really sure yet. i was thinking more along the lines of taking one of the tanks off of my spare 79 and putting it where it would fit best possibly reusing the mounting brackets or using them as templates to make new ones and then run all the plumbing accordingly. i havent taken a really good look at the in cab tank to see where it might fit or if it is bigger or smaller than the other tank. the problem is that the truck is at my parents house and it is hard to get time away from the wife and kid to get much of a start on this thing. the first thing is the frame though as that shouldnt require hardly any money.
If ya get things started, keep us posted! I have been contemplating the same thing with my Supercab and a donor short box... I like the Supercab short box look, and no, it won't be for working; maybe the odd trailer pulling.
