Ball Joints

99 - expy - 5.4l xlt. 65,000 miles

Looking for advice on my wife's truck........

Not familiar with Ford suspensions, but know my BMW pretty well and have done quite of work on my car...tie rods, bushings, control arms, lower ball joints, etc...

What is a common test for ball joints on these trucks? I would imagine you jack up the car, hold the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and look for play?

Also, I read something about these trucks having ball joints that are supposed to be greased?

If the ball joints are bad, is there a procedure to replace them? Is there an inner and outer ball joint as on my bmw? Do you replace the whole control arm?

I should get under there and look this weekend......but looking for some advice so I know what I'm looking at.

this forum is excellent !!

Yep, jack it up and shake wheels looking for excessive play. The upper BJ's are replaced with the control arms while the lowers can be replaced individually. No grease fittings from factory.
