I am new to the board so if this question has been answered already please forgive me. I recently bought a 95 F250 4x4, I noticed the rubber boot around the ball joint between the pitman arm and the drag link is bad. I know that dirt and stuff is going to migrate in there and destroy the joint eventually so I am looking to replace that ball joint. So my question is, can I replace that ball joint or do I have to replace the whole pitman arm? Also what is involved in replacing this particular ball joint...do I just seperate the joint, pop out the old ball joint and put in a new one?? Also if anyone knows a good online source for moog ball joints I would like to know. Thanx for the help
You don't need to replace the Pitman arm (connects the the steering box). You should be able to replace the tie rod end (not 'ball joint', those are on the steering knuckles, same type of joint, different use/name) on the end of the drag link. Sorry I don't know any good online sources for Moog parts. Try Napa or CarQuest.
I assume that you're talking about replacing the tie rod, with the ball joint, under the pitman arm. You can't just replace the ball joint, you will have to replace the entire tie rod. The same seal on my truck (94 F250 4x4) is bad and I checked with the dealership about getting a new seal. They said that the seals only come on new tie rods, you can't purchase them seperately from a dealership. They said to check at an autoparts store for an aftermarket replacement. Carquest has one that the Ford dealer said will work. I'm going to check on it today.
