I am going to have my transmission serviced again this summer and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to spend a little extra for a synthetic brand oil instead of the regular.

Any suggestions?

I have been using castrol syntec dex 3 for the last 90,000 miles and really like it. slightly firmer shifts,(not hard) clean fluid each fluid change,(30,000 mi) no burnt smell, cooler running temp. it is almost like running type F. the $5.00 a quart is cheap compared to a new trans.(I write it all off on my taxes,so it takes a bite out of it).

I just had a major tranny rebuild and upgrade performed on my 91 E4OD.I was advised that if you expect your tranny to perform any demanding tasks such as hauling or running large tires,it is highly recomended to run synthetic fluid. It doesnt break down under the high temperatures that can be generqated by the torque converter, when pulling a heavy load on a steep grade.
Another suggestion is to install a tranny fluid temp gauge, they are inexpensive, easy to install, and should be monitored,if you plan on using your truck to its rated capacities. Also do not use your OD under strainuose conditions. In fact there are aftermarket kits that can be installed that allow your tranny to not automaticly choose OD at start up.

Where can you get that "automatic off" at. I usually drive in the city, (stop and go) and occasionally highway. Actually its about 50/50 now, and I hate to have to push the off button.
I have never had a bit of problems with the e4od and pretty pleased except the occasional hard shift. I don't really pull anything over 7,000 lbs and the truck is a 2wd, so I don't have bigger tires. Any extra suggestions is really appreciated

Thanks for the reply, by the way, how many quarts does the transmission hold? I have a transmission cooler aswell. Does the synthetic fluid go through the cooler okay?

Depends on the type of tranny and the year, but my C6 with a cooler took 14 quarts. (I used Redline!)

I've got a 91 E4OD, 4X2 also w/ 300/6 and occasionally get the hard shift too. Anyone know why this happens? Usually seems to be after I get off the highway using OD. Thanks.

I think you probably should adjust your bands, that should do the trick.

my 97 F-250HD psd,4x4 uses 14 Qts(drop pan and drain torque converter)but a 2wd could be different.

Haven't had any experience with adjusting the tranny bands before. Can you give me more details? I'll be changing my tranny fluid in the next couple of weeks so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually, I am not sure that the E4od has bands, being it is a electronic transmission. If you have a Haynes Manual, it will tell you alot and it is a good investment to look at.
