help! engine starts runs for 5 seconds dies.... takes 5 minutes to start replaced all return lines put an electric fuel pump with check valve inline new tanks all new fuel lines no air leaks that i can find . can i plug off the return line to the tank?
No, dont plug it... that would leave pressure on all the lines, IP, fuel bowl, etc.
Start it, after it dies, try pouring cool water over the rear of the IP If it starts easier then the IP is going bad. I doubt this will reveal anything, as it is only running for 5 seconds. worth a try. Sounds like the IP to me. Could also involve hte injectors.
it sounds to me like the the fuel bypass line from the return rail to the fuel filter is still hooked up and draining the filter back into the tank when it sits.
this is probably the most overlooked thing on international fuel system diagnosis.
it has been addressed by both international and ford back in 89-90, but most people did not know about it, or forgot about it. i found the hard way, replaced the fuel pump 4 times in 1 week claiming they were bad till found a tsb on the bypass hose elimination. disconnected it that night(this was in 91) and to this day i have not had a problem with my truck, and made the same modification to over 50 others to the amazement of quite a few know it all diesel mechanics
TJC got a number for that TSB, my line works fine but many have found the check valve does leak air if there is an air leak in the system. The fuel system is a totally sealed system when it's working correctly..... There are numerous air leak points which will allow air in and bleed off fuel. This sounds like what is happening.
is there a tsb on a 91 F-350. if so, what does it look like and where is it? what is the proper name for it? is it hard to disconnect? every now and then my truck will start right up and after 5 seconds dies off. it always starts again, but it takes a while.
its been 14 years, so i do not know the tsb #. what i did was remove the fitting from the filter housing and block it off with a brass plug, and put a screw in the line, then bent the line over on itself and clamped it with a hose clamp. when i changed the injectors, i deleted the line. the way it was explained to me was that one of the end caps on the return rail will let air in, but not let fuel leak out. when it sits overnight, the air coming in will drain the filter back to the tank.
try checking the ruber line that runs from the top of the injection pump. not sure where it goes but mine had a crack under the clamp that let in enough air to cause that same problem, changed the line the problem was gone
