Starting my pick-up requires MAJOR foot pressure on the clutch with my back firmly braced against the seat. Clutch works fine.
My Haynes mannual (they attempt to cover too many years/models in one book) indicates a non adjustable switch. I removed and examined the device and could see nothing obviously wrong.
Is there somthing else I should look at b/4 running down to the Ford garage and ordering a new one? Also, is there a procedure for disabling the interlock system (we drove vehicles for years' w/o problems b/4 the lawyers responded to Audi's nightmare).
Check to see if your firewall section mounting the clutch cylinder is separating due to failed spot welds. This problem is notorious and well known. It results in less travel on your clutch pedal which manifests itself as an apparent failure of the safety switch. Had same problem on an 88 Bronco.
I had the same problem on my 93 and it turned out there was a plastic gromet (sp?) that was broke where the link goes into the switch. They replaced the gromet and it was fixed.
Just my experience.... also check to make sure the firewall hasn't given way as indicated by the other reply.
you should be able to bypass the switch easy enough as you suggested. It is pobably just a switch leg to send a control signal to the ignition. If it is just two wires at the switch you should be able to connect those two together and affect the same result as if the switch were activated. You know how those lawers are though,...so you didnt hear it from me.
