Got a 302 with the C6 trans. Trans is on it's way out and I'm gonna slap in a used one when I can find a good price. Is it just the bell housing that's different from the C6's on big blocks and the C6's on small blocks? Couldn't I just grab any ol' C6 and put my current bell housing on it if I had to and it'd just swap right on? Am I correct here or way off base?
C6 bellhousings are cast into the tranny itself. They can't be removed and changed like some of the manual trannys. So you'll need to find a C6 that will fit the 302. I'm sure someone here will tell you what other engines this same tranny fits to make your search a bit easier.
If it truely has a removable bell housing then it's a C4 (most likely with a 302). They are a dime a dozen in the bone yards and easy to rebuild. If you get one with a 26 spline inpit shaft and a pan fill, it will handle a fair amount of power and can be easily built for serious racing.
