A4LD Transmission

I have a 1987 ranger with the above transmission. It is a 2 wheel drive truck with a 2.9 engine. I have been told that only a 87 transmission out of a 2.9 will work. Mine is shot and I need a replacement. Any comments on this?

as long as it's a A4LD it will work..up thru ..i think..93..after that they went to the electric servo for overdrive.
I took the trans out of my 85 and put it in my 86..same trans.

I think it was 88 or 89 they switch to ECU control of the 3/4 shift & TC lockup, I'm sure someone will know exact year.
