I thought I could diagnose this problem, but I am not coming up with the answer. On my wife's 2000 explorer, when you try to use the lever to wash the windshield, the wipers come on for about 4 sweeps like they should, but the pump doesn't come on. I unplugged the connector to the pump, connected a volt meter using a known ground, and no power is going there with the washer switch engaged. Is it the multi function switch on the steering column, or something else? Seems to me if it was the switch on the column, the wipers wouldn't work either.
Also, I read that on 97 multi function switches, you can clean them, but the 2000 model appears to not have the plastic "cap" you can take off to clean the connections.
Good point Jerry. Reality check for me...I should know to start with the simplest things and work from there. I'll check the fuse out tomorrow. Hopefully that is it.
I agree to check the fuses first, but this problem is indicative of a bad MFS. This happened to me ('95 XLT) for a long time. It was a nuisance but I could usually get the washer to work on the second or third time. Eventually the switch failed further and I had no headlights. Replacing the switch was quick, easy, and it solved my windshield washer problem.
Well, I checked the fuse and it was bad. I replaced it, but still no washer. The wipers work when I try to use the washer, but still no water. The lines are clear, the resevoir is full, etc. I'm trying to narrow this thing down to keep from wasting money on parts I don't need. I tested for voltage at the pump and there is none.....where is the relay and how can I test it? Also, the rear washer doesn't work (I believe the rear uses the same pump and resevoir, right?)
At least on my '95 the rear has its own reservoir in the compartment with the jack. One would presume that it would require its own pump too. Is your rear reservoir empty? There should be a place to fill it on the left rear "door jam" if you open the rear lift gate.
2000 Explorer: Windshield washer relay location and how can I test it???? I've read it's in the fuse box in the engine compartment, but how can I identify it? Please help before the wife starts driving my 98 F150 4x4 :-O
