Engine cuts out at times

My 1994 Aerostar 4WD van with 4.0 liter and automatic trans, has started cutting out at no particular speed or situation. It will be doing just fine for several miles and then all of a sudden it will act like you turned the switch off for a split second, sometimes 2-3 times within a second or two, then runs fine until it does it again. I have replaced the fuel pump, strainer and filter, new air filter, but still does it. I have also tryed to rule out tranny problems by disconnecting the TCC and Overdrive connector on the trans (thinking it might have been a Torque convertor clutch problem, but it does it even when in just drive without the over drive or Lockup. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Are you getting a Check Engine Light?

Even if you are not I would go ahead and pull your own codes. You can do it with a piece of wire or even a paper clip. Here is a how to:

http://www.shotimes.com/php-bin/modu...thold=0&sid=83

Bring the codes here and we can translate them for you.

Off hand it sounds like your Cam Position Sensor (CPS) or Crank Position Sensor (CKS) is on the way out and you are loosing spark. The 4.0L runs on DIS system that requires these systems to be acurate to give you spark.

Thanks so much for the info!! By chance do you know if there is a setting for clearance between the crank position sensor and the crank trigger gear? Mine looks like it has been rubbing a small amount. This engine is brand new, or at least about 28000 miles ago. Everything was brand new, no reused pieces.

It should not look like it has been rubbing, it is all magnetic. It looks like the mechanic that installed it did not use the proper feeler gauge before tightening it down. That would give you sporadic on/off of the engine. I don't have a manual in front of me so I do not know the exact clearence it should be.

It sounds like an ignition module. I had this happen on another vehicl, but I cant remember what. My parents had that go bad on theirs, but the engine would not start at all. If it is, you will need a 5.5mm thin wall socket. Parts stores should have these.

Obars:

Would you post the result of your fix here. I think I might have the same issue. Most of the time the van runs fine, but under load, uphill, sometimes there is a thunk like the engine went dead momentarily. Then everything runs fine again. Is that the symptom you have? Strange thing is that there is no code!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is rare that a CPS or CKS throws a code unless it is completely toast, even then EEC-IV sometimes does not catch it, you have to go by symptoms.

Thanks, I will as soon as I figure it out... On my 64 Comet, I can carry a set of points in the glove box and never worry about this computer crud...

Ok Folks, after a series of cheap blinking light code reader goof-ups, I replaced the throttle postioner (still had the problem), replaced the crank position sensor (still had the problem), replaced the 02 sensor (still had the problem), put in some "Heet" in the fuel, thinking I may have picked up some water in the gas somewhere (still had the problem). Finally I went to the auto parts and bought one of those $36.00 digital code readers and it showed a 157 and 158 code (low and high voltage problems on MAF sensor). I then remembered a MAF sensor that I took off of another 94 aerostar 4.0L. I found it laying next to the barn and it had been out in the weather and buried in about 2 inches of dirt for about a year!! I shook it out, blew it out with air, cleaned it up and put it on the van. I first cleared the computer of all codes. Started the van and Guess what! The van ran perfect!! Runs better than it ever did, and does not cut out anymore!! Have put about 100 miles on it today and its running great!! (Knock on wood). Thanks for the help folks. John
