I have a 2003 Expedition. Has been driving fine, however today it just cut off on the highway twice. First time I just pulled over, place the truck in park and restarted the engine. Second time I did the same thing but this time the service engine soon came on and has been on ever since. I drove home another 45 miles with no problems. Has this happened to anyone else before?
Yup, had that problem. Intermittently occurred for the last couple years. Problem could occur several times a day or it couple be months between occurrences. Turned out to be the Alternator harness. See this link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...uble-code.html
Thanks, I appreciate that. I will get that harness changed.
You're welcome, but make sure that is the problem. At least wearing on the harness is easy enough to check and it's user replaceable and not too expensive.
Getting ready to order a harness tomorrow...ohms checked mine and got soe resistance and then it went away???? Don't like it anyhow. Once I ge the new harness, do I need to have the computer reprogramed or will it just make the charging system light/warning go off? Thanks
You said the service engine soon light came on. What is the code?? Did you have your alternator checked? What if it is that. You will have some resistance. That depends on the length and gauge of wire. You may be premature in ordering a harness. Get the alternator checked first. Take it off or leave it on and head to a parts store that tests them. I wouldn't do anything until you rule that out plus it doesn't cost anything. What if it's the alternator? The harness was a wasted expense unless you see obvious issues with it.
yeah after being told the alt was bad I got a new one only to not fix the problem. So I went back and got the 130 amp one thinking I just had the wrong one. Same thing. So I went back and had them check my old one....yep good. So I got my money back. With the ohms check I had 2 ohms in one wire, 1.5 in another. The third was good but then when I straitened it I got low resistance like .02 so I do not like having the differences in the wires. I can't seem to locate a harness at a parts store yet so still open to suggestions. The fuse box is brand new, well got it from a junkyard and cleaned it and inspected it and then put it in. Had a secondary fuel pump relay burn up on me. It is soldered to the circuit card in the fuse box. Once I got the new one in the truck fired right up but then the charging system dinged at me and the batt light came on. Harness is my next guess.
The alternator harness is something you will have to order from Ford. Check with the parts desk, they can get you the correct part number. I'll see if I can find a document later tonight, it had a some of the part numbers depending on when your truck was built.
I checked with the dealer yesterday and I thought they had said they couldn't get it. Turns out I can but they want the VIN so will give them that today. I'm thinking and hoping the harness fixes the problem. Otherwise I'm going to play some fuse box games again. The dealer dosn't have the relay I need for the old fuse box to be repaired and said I would have to get a new one which I did anyway. Well, a new one from the junkyard anyway. So...build date on my exped is 01/03. The manufacture date on the old fuse box is 12/02. The one from the junkyard is 02/03. Is this going to affect the alt harness? If so then my plan is to get someone to de-solder the relays I need off the new/used fuse box and fix the old one and then put the old one back in. Still going to get a new harness cuz I don't like the ohms readings I got. So yeah....oh what fun. Miss the old cars where things were simple.
Oh Ford01, forgot to tell you....the warning indicator was the thing that dinged at me and the battery light came on, not the service engine light. And I had the alternator checked the other day when this first started and AZ said it was bad cuz putting out low amps....so I got one. didn't fix it...thought it was too small cuz it was 110 so got the 130 amp and that still didn't fix it. Went back, they still had mine so they bench tested it and it checked good...twice. So I have my origional back now and as you can see on the other post, am going a different way. Any other thoughts though I would appreciate. Thanks
