4-speed, or 5?
I have a '91 Ext. 4.0 with the automatic tranny. This has been bothering me for some time...but do I have a 4 speed or 5 speed transmission? (Including OD)
I can shift it from 1st to 2nd, then put it in 'D' and it shifts to 3rd, and at around 47-50mph, it will shift again, and drop another 700-1000 RPM...plus, I still have OD
This is just a nussiance I have been wondering about for some time now

It is a 4 speed with overdrive, where the 97 model is a 5-speed with OD.

The last "shift" on my '89 is the TC locking. Since I have the 4.10 rear axle, it locks at about 40 MPH at light throttle.
I didn't know that the '97 has the 5R55E. Something new every day

Is there a way I can check my axle ratio? Or would this require climbing under the van and looking on the axle?

Assuming that no-one did a switcheroo on you, you can look on the drivers door jam tag and find out. There will be a spot marked Axle with a code:
Here are the codes:
Code Ratio
Conventional
22 4.10
23 3.45
24 3.73
25 3.27
26 3.55
Traction-Lok
B2 4.10
B4 3.73
B9 3.55

Well...Looks like I have a "B9" Traction-Lok 3.55 rear end. I wish it was the 4.10 Trac-Lok though...

I wish I had a Bx rear end instead of the normal 24.

You can also locate the wire that connects to the tranny and put a switch inline to manualy control the torque convertor lock up only when you want it. handy on the hills...

Yea...makes winter driving and my weekly off-roading much easier that both rear tires lock up...
