I have a 1986 F-150 4WD. It wanders a little from side to side when on the road. It not that bad yet, but I want to head off any serious problems. It has 92,000 miles on it. Any suggestions?
I'll tell ya. I checked everything on my 94 and finally changed out the steering box with a rebuilt unit. Problems cured. Cost me $149 at AutoZone and came with a lifetime warranty.
Try adjusting the steering box before replacing it.Adjust the mesh load on the top of steering box, directly above the sector shaft(shaft that the pitman arm atatches to).Dont adjust it to tight though. It could be a few other things but I would try that first and post the results.

Before you start adjusting anything, first check all of the components and make sure they are all ok. First start with the steering coupler, it conects the steering colum and gear box, it has a rubber insert that goes bad and causes play in the steering. If this is ok then check all of the tie rods and drag links. make sure there is not play there. Finally if everything is ok, then at last you can adjust the gear box, if you make it too tight, it will not want to come back after a turn, you will have to bring the steering wheel back, this will also cause damage to the gear box, so be very carful.
Pop the hood. With the engine OFF, have an assistant turn the wheel, back and forth, just where the 'play' is. Watch your colapsable intermediate shaft (connects steering column to steering gear). You will see slop where the inner and outer shaft meet. There's a Teflon piece and a spring in there that wear out. It's about $100 at the Dealer. The dealer will try to tell you it's no longer made. Have them look in their old parts book, NOT on the new computer. I went to several huge dealerships in MD, VA, DC and their "new" computer sys. showed no longer available. I went to my local smalll town dealer and they couldn't believe it's not available, since it fits many years of trucks and vans. They said the computer software has a bunch of mistakes. Looked in an OLD book and pulled the shaft off their shelf!!
Another source is www.borgenson.com They make a replacement assembly.
What I meant is that the teflon and sping wear out. You must replace the entire shaft assembly. This fixed my truck and a friend's Bronco. I eventually replaced my PS box due to a leak. Check all componenets FIRST, including the intermediate shaft.
