any recomendations? what do you guys have? i like that fancy shmancy chrome, green illumination "old school" look, with all the buttons and gadgets money can buy, but those run like 140, i was looking at a cobra 29 WX NW ST, but what about those"compact", mobile, handheld thingys?
all of those smaller radios will work if you dont have much space, all cb radios are rated at 4 watts the highest allowed by the FCC. but you can find refurbished ones offered by midland and cobra to name a few, that are much cheeper, also the cobra you named is a high end model anyway, you can get them with less options and much cheeper.
I maybe able to point you in the right direction if I knew how much your willing to spend on one.
The one that comes to mind for me is the old Presidents which i
believe are now Midlands, Cobras are good but think there over rated. Fordsfairlane is right there all pretty much the same it all
depends how many bings and bells you want on it.
I ended up buying the radio shack 40 dollar model. It seems to do the trick and should, cause all the new radios are the same when you buy them out of the box. Like was previously said, 4 watts is the legal maximum for citizen's band. It's all about the bells and whistles. Stick to brand names you recognize.
I also know that while most are good, everyonce in a while you will find a bad one. so keep up with the ticket. and what ever you do DO NOT KEY UP THE MIC unless you have a antenna hooked up. or you will burn it up quick.
...what about those"compact", mobile, handheld thingys?
Do you mean something that looks like a "walkie talkie"? They may be low powered and the antenna would probably not get nearly as much of a signal as a roof mounted one. I'm no expert, though.
I've been told that if on a budget, buy a cheap radio, and the best antenna you can get.
That's very true about not keying the mike without an antenna hooked up. A broken antenna wire can result in damage too.
You might want to look for something in the Uniden line of radios. They make their own radios. From what I've read on the net, Cobra, Midland and some others have gone with Chinese made boards and stopped using Uniden made boards.
