Hi. I need some info re: my 1972 F-100's 9 inch rear.
I'm having new gears put in my 3rd member and need some bearings. I know the numbers for the pinion bearings (M 88048), but can someone tell me what diameter bearings I need for the carrier?
I have these numbers:
LM 501249- 1.625" ID, 2.879" OD
LM 102949- 1.781" ID, 2.879" OD
LM 603049- 1.781" ID, 3.063" OD
Which of these fits my carrier? Thanks in advance!
measure them if you have it out if it's less than 3" then it's the small bearing (most likely) if it's right at 3" then it's a big bearing case but you have to measure it to know for sure. Oh and number of splines on your axle will determine which inner dia you need but I would go with the bigger one anyway due to the fact most have the 31 spline axles but even if you have the 28 spline it will still fit through but not the other way around.
I went with the 102949 which is proper for the small-bearing case, but neglected to inform my builder that even though I had 31 spline-type bearings, I needed 28-spline side gears. So today I get the thing back, looks great and turns beautifully. Lug the thing into the housing, slide in an axle, give it a spin... clunk clunk clunk... 31-spline side gears. AAAAAAAARGH. This was to be the day this thing finally started moving. Not.
I can't even fault the builder because I just wasn't thinking and forgot to specify the spline count. Thought I'd update on that because I'm kind of in a bad mood now
