When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network.
Are there any programs that can track down my person name (like John Smith) from my IP address? Are our personal names by anyway affiliated with our computers?
I was browsing a website many times for awhile, suddenly today I can't access it. On the bottom there is a "eye icon" that says "privacy report" or something...
Maybe the website is trying to track me down? What's happening?
First, was it only one website that you couldn't access? If that's the case, then it could be that the web-server is/was down and there is nothing you can do about it until they get the problem fixed on their server.
I don't worry about the eye. Sometimes websites will download cookies (more than not, they're harmless, just dropping info on your machine for when you go back to the website. But there are some issues you'd want to be aware of like Yahoo! They have recently instituted web beacons, which means that they're going to track every little thing you do on the web, whether you're on their website or not. THAT'S scary!) or if the website isn't registered as a safe zone with Microsoft, that could trigger it. If you're worried about spyware or something, download Spybot and run it. You can download from this link http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ It's freeware so you don't have to pay for it.
Also, on another not DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER! Go <a href="http://www.mozilla.org" target=new>here (mozilla.org)</a> and get firefox. Just click the blue "here" it will open a new window and take you to the firefox website... Firefox alone will stop almost all pop-ups, and spyware.
I just switched over to a faster computer (HP Pavilion P 4 2.0 gig) with WinXP Home Edition SP2 and find this little "eye" down at the bottom of my window. Something I never had with my older PIII 600 Win98se.
When I click on it a window pops up. It is a "Privacy Report" to tell me "depending on my privacy settings, some cookies were restricted or blocked".
This is what you might be talking about.

there are scripts that will read information off of your computer, like who it's registered to. If you filled out any personal information and clicked on save this (name/password/info) then it is in a file on your computer, and that can be read. Most of this stuff is just targeted ad's, as for finding you, if you have an uncommon name and they traceroute your ip, then all they have to do is a switchboard check of your name and see if they can pull up any listed phone numbers.
If you have a permantly assigned IP #, it will have a name and a billing addresse associcated with it. But it's unlikely you have one of those unless you're paying extra to your ISP for that.
We used to think that when we dialed-up and got a different IP # each time that there wasn't much of a threat that way. But with cable and DSL, we tend to keep the same IP # longer and was said before that can be used (with some work) to find out who you might be.
I hope you're running an anti-virus and especially a firewall. Even Micro$oft's is better than nothing if you're using Windows XP. This will help against some of the malicous web sites that try to gather information from you by leaving small programs running on your computer when you (perhaps accidently) visit their web sites. As was mentioned before, give Firefox a try (because it only has about 6 to 10% market share, it's not as an efficient a tool for the bad guys to use).
Never give the internet true specifics....
(its shared by too many that have interests that you may not be aware of)
I have a gimmick that I soldered together myself - it CHOPS the netcon by means of a simple relay at the touch of a button. It beats heck out of holding the power button down....

Anything you send on the web can be identified by network tools. Admin tools are the most frequently pirated by hackers - and they are effective.
Hackers/Pirates are not dumb - and often are highly trained. Beyond the skill levels of the average individual that writes on the internet. Many of them are legitimate employees of respected software corporations, or used to be. They are familiar with emergent protocols and code that you and I have no idea of, and take advantage of these things. They are at the cutting edge of all internet activeties, and constantly looking for means to take advantage of any weaknesses they can identify. It is the nature of the genuine "HACKER" to take advantage of any exploit that is currently available - just to see if it works.
The average HACKER is someone who is trying out their skills. They are amatuers, primarily, and thus there is no telling what they might try. Amateurs are unpredictable, professionals are. This is the old mainstay. You never know what a "Hacker" might try to do.....
Does that answer your question?

Most of the people I know that claim to be hackers are wannbes.... They couldn't hack their way out of a t-shirt soaked in acid. There are some legit hackers tho.. Hackers aren't the problem as their quest is not to harm you. It's to see if they can do it... It's the pirates/crackers you have to watch out for. THey are the malicious ones. Hackers tend to break into someones computer just to prove they can do it.. They might poke around, but won't steal anything.
Like "script Kiddies" whose idea of fun is breaking into a website to deface a homepage using coded scripting. A bunch of these twits (mostly from Brazil) attacked several sites using a common IP last year. Leaving behind a message and whatever group name used to showoff who did it. Then went to Zone-H.org to post their "digital attack" successes for bragging rights.
The homepage is generally the only part affected and you can still access the rest of the site using a "backdoor". Some do this to show a "hole" is needed to be taken care of. Ok, I will buy that, but it is a nuisance when it happens to you. Take2Games, Godgames and my own Runegame.com was part of a wholesale IP "hit" back in August 2004. The Webtechs quickly took care of it all but if you did not have the forums or seperate pages archived. You could not access them because the homepage was blanked out.
Most of these are rank amaturs and Hackers see these as the "lowest" of wannabes.
