Coffee Can?
It's a vacuum resevior. It allows vacuum accessories (cruise, heating blend air doors..) to operate ( wide open throttle) when the vacuum is low. On a truck you may see very long periods of WOT, like when pulling a trailer up a hill. There should be a diagram under the hood that shows vacuum hoses, components, and the res.
