I am having a problem with my display on my 89 F-150, I have the factory cassette player, that was used from 87-93. I dont know if anyone else has had problems with the display going out, but the only way to check station/time is with a maglite. I am tired of this, people have told me that there is a light that is inside of the radio that needs replacement, can anyone help me with this delema?
There is a bulb for the display that burns out often on Fords. You can get them from Radio Shack. Go to WWW.CORRAL.NET
Im sure someone there can tell you how or where to find the procedure.
You can get the bulb from your local Ford dealership, it is actually not expensive, about $1.00 maybe $1.50. these aren't hard to change. You can buy the U shaped tool to remove the radio from the dash ( they sell them at Wal-Mart $3.00 to $4.00 ) or you can make your own ( thats what I did ) take a coat hanger cut it with sidecuts make it U shaped to fit in the holes on the outer edges of the radio, remove the trim panel around the radio then push the tools in simultaneously just a little way to release the radio, you don't have to hold them in they will stay there, then pull out on the radio it will slide right out, you may have to move the tools a little in or out to get it to release.remove the ant. plug & wire harness from back of radio, pull the ***** off the radio now there is 1 or 2 small phillips screws on each side of the radio on the black plastic part remove these screws & tip the face of the radio up and away to alow access to the inside, it will still be connected by some short wires , you can see the little bulb just in side the radio, pull it out gently with some needle nose pliers you can usually put it back in with your fingertips, now just reverse procedure. you can do this in the time that it will take to read all this, take your tools out of the radio before you slide it back in.
Pastmaster, yes this is an easy evening job, should be less than an hour, the most trouble you might have is getting the release tools just right to release the radio.
The 89 radio is set up different, you don't need the tools. There is a bezel that pulls right off of the dash and all you have to do is unscrew the radio. Maybe I can get it done in 30 minutes!!
Well being able to just unscrew it makes it even easier, my 90 full size Bronco had the radio that you needed the u- shaped tools on , so does my 94 Ford Aerostar, I've had to replace the bulbs in both of them. good luck.
Mine went out a few years back. Pull out the radio remove the LED and repalce the little light bulb behind it. I went to radio shack for the replacement because they were a lot cheaper than the dealer.
Ya, I wish that I had the factory rear speakers that also came with the Bronco's. Ford didn't add rear speakers to the pickups till 1992. I guess it was cheaper that way! My uncles 1992 Crown Victoria has a brownish gray display, does that mean that there are different color displays? I always thought that red would look kinda cool with the maroon interior. My 1993 F-150 had the U-hook type removal. Thanks again for the help!
Pastmaster, I don't know about the different colored displays, my Bronco & Aerostar have a green display, so did my older Aerostar ( 88 model ) my oldest daughter has a 98 Taurus and its green also, I suppose it depends on what color the actual display cover is. My Bronco had a very nice stereo in it , factory speakers and all , I think it sounded better than my 94 Aerostar's stereo, well I guess its because the factory speakers are small in the Aerostar, good luck!
