Running Ragged

My '92 2.3L Ranger runs ragged intermintently. Codes in continuous memory are 14, 18, 31, and 88. The Engine Running test will sometimes give a code 98 (hard fault) and other times an 18 & 52. The fuel system, plugs, and wires are good. The coils have not been changed, but have tested good. At times it seems to run on only 2 holes, smells like burning plastic, sounds like a "Whoopy Cushion", and gets about 5 mi to the gallon. Any ideas?

you will want to worry about KOER codes first. you probably got code 52 because you did not turn the steering wheel when you were suppose to during the test. code 18 indicates IDM circuit failure I believe. others will come along and give you insight into code 18 as I am not sure about it. good luck

The 98 means you still have KOEO codes, are you sure you don't have any KOEO codes?

The 14, 18 and 88 all point to an ignition problem, have you run the pinpoint tests for these codes?
