E4OD automatic transmission problem

I have a 1993 ford f-150 4x4 302 v-8 with the E4OD automatic transmission. my question is i was driving and i noticed 1st gear went out.. then about 10 mins later 2nd went out and then everything went out besides reverse.. I read up and figured that it could be my rear clutch in my transmission which it drives all forward gears or it could be my sungear.. but what threw me off was when 1st went out i had 2nd for a lil bit then nothing... could that be the torque converter but if it is how come i still have reverse... also when i lost all forward gears i left it in low 1 and maybe 5 mins later it finally kicked in but then i took off and it acted like it just totally slipped and found myself at the same problem.. can anyone help me out.. i'd like to know what it is...
