1990 f350 460 E4OD, This am went out warmed truck and put it in reverse and I had nothing, I raised the idle a bit then it jumped into reverse then moved. I thought that was weird, so I put it in drive and the truck moved forward. So I put it back in reverse and it had nothing again, then I increased the idle and it jumped into gear. I then took it out for a road test, Trans shifted ok 1st to 2nd gear but was slow to shift 2nd to 3rd. Then when the shift occured it was very hard, (shift kit kinda hard). I came home and pulled the codes, KOEO&KOER tests but got nothing, no OD light blinking. I researched the FTE forums and found several posts that have relative symptoms as mine. My questions are..... Seems that reverse gear has nothing to do with electronics, right? Or is it the controller on the side of the trans? Some posts say it is a line pressure problem, others say it is a controller problem. Can I get some clarification on this?
I'd start by checking your fluid level and color. Then you might double check your TPS--believe me, when those go bad, you will think your tranny is going to self-destruct. Yours may be borderline or have a dead spot in it that's not showing up in the codes. You might also check the connector to the tranny and make sure it's tight.
I have an E40D and 460 engine in my truck which was acting up. I found transmission fault codes were flashed through my MIL lamp when in self test mode ,KOEO.
I rebuild a few E40D/4r100 trans at our Ford dealership.I have found the electronic side of the trans very reliable.
Just make sure your gear position switch is ok and correctly aligned and your TPS is ok ,and has no open circuits.
If these are ok and you have no fault codes then you may have a hydraulic pressure concern eg, blocked filter, low oil level, pressure regulator valve problem in the trans pump or leaking low/Reverse clutch pack seal leak or even a manual valve problem in the main control valvebody. I suggest you carry out a line pressure test at idle . You should have approximately 50 psi in drive, 90 to 100 psi in reverse and about 70psi in manual 1st @idle when warm. It may also be of some help to carry out air pressure test on the reverse clutch piston. I have seen a few of these pistons crack near the inner seal and clutch packs worn out on trucks that do a great deal of very heavy duty work.
Hope this helps, let me know how you get on
Fluid level is good, I am going to check the pressures. I have no codes in the eec, except for the egr code which is intermittent and I have known about that one. I will keep ya posted on what the outcome is.
Here are some pics of the various E4OD electronic controls, I hope these will help some people identify different parts that can go wrong on the E4OD. I have read some posts on here and some folks ask what are they? or where are they? So I hope this pics will help out.

Changed fluid and screen today, also finally got mlps code. I cleared the codes and changed the filter and fluid, shifts like butter! I have a mlps on order, should be in tomorrow. So far I put 120 miles on truck & trailer today after the fluid change and no codes or problems so far! (sweatin bullets)
