FE series question???

I need to rebuild my tired old 360. I was planning on getting a 390 carnk and rods but what else could I do? Is the 360 block the same as a 428? Basically, what combo of stock ford parts can I make with my current block. I really want to stick with all stock ford parts( heads,block,crank,rods,pistons) Can i put a 428 crank in there and make a ??? Just curious


I do not want a race car, I want a good reliable engine that is fun to drive. I am only looking for about 300-350hp and around 350-400 ft.lbs.. I know a 390 can do this, but I am curious as to what all can be built, I like to be a little different than the norm.

just build the 360. get you a 390 crank and rods. a crane 941 cam, a performer RPM intake.

when you get you a rebuild kit for your 360/390 (which ever way you choose to go) if you are rebuilding it to be a 390 then get a rebuild kit for a 360. the piston will be the higher compression car pistons about 9.5:1 vs the truck 390 pistons at about 8:1

you would have to bore that block .080 to get the same bore a a 428. It can be done when i was checking at my local machine shop he said that it would make the walls to thin and that would not be a very good thing to try.

this is my build for my 390 all parts form summit expect rocker arms and pushrods

rebuild kit FEM-MKP601N-311 (this kit says that it has lifter but it does not come with them) just a FYI

cam and spring CRN-343942

intake EDL-7105

oil pump MEL-M57HV

oil pump drive shaft ARP-154-7902

rod bolts ARP-155-6002

timing chain SUM-G6608

headers WLK-86041

Carter AFB carb

Pushrods from www.DSCmotorsport.com (great place for good parts)

rocker arms from local CarQuest

just to help you out

i think that the 390 will be all that you need and not putting alot of money into it

if you do go with that crane 343941 cam (cam and lifter kit 343942) i would suggest that you go to www.dscmotorsport.com and get his adjustable valve train kit that he has for about $320. i think it was new pushrods, adjustable rocker arm shaft assembly with solid spacers in between the rocker arms (great deal)

he knows alot about the FE motors

You can use a 428 crank and have a 410+. Where I still can buy 390 cranks for way less than $50 428 cranks are a little more spendy. $200 on the low end (bargan) and upwards of $500 is the norm for a stock 428 crank.

And with the 428 crank it will need to be balanced with the flywheel. 300+ HP is ez for a 390.
