I'm planning on traveling between 6 and 7 thousand miles for a summer vacation. All within two weeks time. Anyone tested their 7.3 like this before? If so anything I should be concerned with, other that a sore bottom?
Man now that's a trip! I thought 10 hour drives are bad. When I am making my trips I make sure I have extra oil, coolant, the handy tools required when in a bind(you can't plan for everything). Other than that, I have never experienced any problems, and I make those trips pretty often. Btw, if you don't mind me asking, where are you driving to? Thats some miles to rack up!

We are doing a real life Grizzwalls,,heading from CA to FL with the family. Trying to get there as soon as feasible and were doing it as economically as possible. It's a total of about 2500 miles. I know it's going to be rough, but nothing is better than putting ourselves out there and seeing what happens.

Speaking from experience, take your time and don't get in a hurry. Take frequent breaks and do some sight seeing along the way. You'd be surprised what you can find to do even in the middle of nowhere... That's a long trip, be safe and have fun!
What Max is saying is true. We so often get our sights fixed on the goal, that we get tunnel vision. There's tons of things to do in the middle of the journey. For example, on your way west, stop at Carlsbad Caverns in N. Mexico.
Well the original plan was to do it in 2 1/2 days, and we know we would have dragging!!!! So, we added another full day and that should help us out more. As a side note, our vacation is not the drive together, it's the time we will spend in FL. Gonna do Disneyworld and all that good stuf.
My concern was the performance of the 7.3 on those types of long hauls. I hope she holds up good...
This is what my dad and I do before a long trip.
1. Do an oil change and while you are at it check all fluid levels
2. Give the bottom side a good once over and grease any joints that need them.
3. Give the topside a good once over, look for any abnormalities.
4. Check all tire pressures (including the spare tire)
5. Clean inside and outside of vheicle (windows, vacuum etc.)
6. Drink a beer and relax when done.
Assuming that your rig is in good shape, I think that it will be just fine.
My drivers average 3500 a week for the truck no problem. My best advice. leave as early as you can and be off the road no later then four PM. Hotels and Motels fill up quick during peak season, you do not want to be stranded with nowhere to sleep, find one with a pool. Stay hydrated and eat. You will be fine. Sounds like a great adventure. Have the truck serviced when you arrive.
Good luck.

three guidlines i follow that help on long cross country drives...
1 - set the cruise... it takes the stress off your right foot... and keeps your attention on the road not on the speedo...
2 - take off your shoes once you get on the highway and get your cruise set... wear some shoes that you can slip on and off easilly... you would be amazed at how much more comfortable you are without your shoes on...!
3 - relax and take your time.... stop when you feel like stopping... give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going... don't drive if you are tired and don't drive in bad weather conditions..!
When the truck was stock 17 Mpg on the freeway Desert driving my truck is a obs truck it's a 97 4x4 with an auto trans. and 4.10 gears. Now i get 14 to 15 mpg i run 35 or 315/75/16 in. tires a superchip tuner tymar intake and a 3 in downpipe to 4 in straitpipe.
