HI, I am Johnnybench520, cant get into account so I re registered...
Heres the problem, keep inmind that I am dumb enough to acutally do this, so I may need a simple answer,
I hooked up a optima yellow top backwards, it was inly at 11.5 volts, I dont know what I was thinking. Well, I have absolutely no power, I replaced the starter solinoid, old batt that works, and have tried another ignition switch with no luck, No fuses apear to be harmed.
When the truck Is cold, I can start it by jumping the solinoid, ( well, Ive done that twice) All of the threads I have looked at mention that I probabilly have blown a fusable link, heres the goody, I cant find a fusable link. The only one I see is hooked up to the alt. Is this the mystery wire? I have attempted to follow the B+ side small wire from the solinoid through the harness, looking for a burn spot, or soft spot, no luck, I have made it to the first junction into the dash. Havent gone further, I wanted to clear easy stuff first.
From the positive batt post, I have a short thick gague wire that goes to the solinoid, and a accessory wire that goes to a cb, from the solinoid, I have the usual mess, minus the fusable link, could somebody please chime in with a fix, of instructions to find those links?? Thanks,
I guess you are getting power through the ignition switch, since it runs when you jump it.
Do your headlights work?
Do your domelights and various other things work?
We need to narrow down what section of your electrical system is not working. If everything works, except it won't crank, then you may have a problem with the neutral safety switch.
Thanks for looking at my post, I appreciate it, I am getting ready to go to the dark side, and use the services of a professional mechanic. ( nothing wrong with supporting them).
I attempted to jump the truck again. This time the starter cranks, the engine wants to run, but when I let off the jumper, the truck dies, I have no energy going to the truck, but that time I did get it to jump, It idled for about a half hour, and everything was normal. My sneeking suspicion is that there was supposed to be a fusable link right by the solinoid where any reasonable person can see it, however in the last 30 years on the truck's like, the link has been removed, re-wired etc, the only link I see id to the alt. I am betting that I have a single wire that is supposed to ack like a "on" to power the cab that is shorted out mid harness.
To sumerize...
A. I have no electrical at all, not even a door light,
B Ima moron, but will be a smarter man for fixing this.
ok,further research has netted me a few more fantastic ideas, If these don't work, expect to see a new book out by me... "101 ways to mess up a perfectly good truck" By JA,
Aniways....
Tell me If I am wrong.. Off of the B+ side of the ignition solinoid, I have a black, yellow( Baby poo brown as I see it) wire that has "fusable link" printed on it that goes to my ignition switch. if this is my mysterious link, that would explain why there is absoluely NO power going to the cab, It isnt getting there, because it isn't even making it to the voltage regulator.
Soo genious way # 35 to destroy a good ford truck... Broach that bad boy with a 12ish gague wire, just to see if I can get some current to the cab, If this works, of course I will go get a real fusable link, solder and shrink wrap it.
If it dosent work, I will have a fire extinguisher ready..
You know that a fuseable link doesn't necessarily have a fuse in it? It can look just like a normal, usually thicker, wire (which is what it sounds like what you found). Sometimes when the burn, on the inside, you can grab it with both hands and gently pull away from the middle (hope that makes sense) and if it starts stretching like Stretch Armstrong, it is probably burned. If this is the case you can normally just splice in a new fuseable link wire.
LOL Streatch armstrong... If I would have thought of that, it would make a killer nickname, I will be sure to post progress, and let you guys know what haponed!
Ok Replaced the fusable link that goes to the Voltage regulator, no go, I looked at the voltage regulator yesterday, and It looked brand new out of the box, can it be ruined internally?
The voltage regulator will not keep the truck from starting or running. It's for charging only. I thought you had found a fusible link for the wire which is also hooked to the battery + at the solenoid, and leaves the fender area and heads for the fuse box and dash. You should have a main wire like this that feeds the whole truck. This sounds like what your problem is, since the whole truck is dead.
Thanks for the reply, I can's find that wire, I know in theory where it is, and hopefully The wire is easilly accessable by someone who knows what is going on. I will look more and fill you guys in.
Thanks!
JA
Edit: I replaced the fusable link that heads to the alt, it is the only one I can see, I also replaced the regulator, and as stated before it did nothing. I will still fill you guys in!
Thanks!
JA
