Exclamation 4.6L Towing

OK, this might have already been asked, but I have a TT that weights around 6500 lbs. I have a 1998 F150 4.6L, so what I was wondering is can I tow the TT in OD on flat road, or should I always keep it in D? It handles the load pretty well, but I can sure tell I pulling something going up a good size hill. Any help would be great.

I did put a Flowmaster and K&M intake to improve the HP. I was also thinking about buying a chip.

i have always been told to tow in d and not in od. they say that it feel ok but you trany is taking abuse the whole time.

also, i like my chip. for you. i would get a tuner and not a chip. motorhaven has some to choose from.

what furrby said.....tuner and keep it in drive....out of overdrive......should help the performance of the truck expecially for towing

4.6 towing

I have been towing a 3 horse, slant load gooseneck trailer with 4.6's for the last three years. originally with an F150 reg. cab long bed, then all last year with an '02 supercrew. the weight on the id tag for the trailer reads about 12,000 lbs. there aren't a lot of times that I use OD, unless its a long flat area. Patience is a virtue, and once you get up to highway speeds, it is pretty easy to keep it there, even with 3 to 5 horses inside. i noticed that the 4.6l torque peaks above 3000 rpm's while the 5.4l peaks at about 2500. this past week i swapped the 4.6l for a 5.4l in the supercrew and have noticed a great improvement, overall. it isn't required to floor the gas any longer to get up to speed, and i no longer am required to shift the auto "manually". i do still avoid OD unless it is still the long flats.
