My 2009 is basicly stock it has a Jet chip, K&N drop in and a Flowmaster muffler with the stock pipes. I towed my TT for the first time this year and nothing has changed but I got 7 MPG! The TT is a 33' with two slides that wieght's in at 8k empty so around 9k to 9200 ready to role. That is without water of course. Now dont get me wrong plenty of power. But 7MPG that is aweful! I knew it would be worse then my 6.0 but that is borderline unexpectable MPG's. Am I missing something?
My 11K + 5'r got 8.6 from AZ to MI. The old 5.4 got 9-10 on same trips but, I had to slow down (no choice) on hills and such. The V-10 just powers up and over.
Boy, you guys are lucky!!! I towed a 24' box trailer, that weighed around 6500 lbs, and got 6.3 mpg! Worst part, truck had to go into 2nd gear to go up hills at 60 mph. Mine is a 2v, and runs good......until you put a load on it, lol!

Would I be correct if I guested you have a four speed auto and 3.73 differential?
Sort of, CCSB, 4x4, AT, 4.30 gears, full Banks kit (Headers,y-pipe, exhaust, intake) 285/75/16 tires. I added an X3 from Mike (big differance.....but still needs 2nd. gear and 4200 rpm to maintain 60 mph).
Like I said, runs good unloaded........but put some weight and a hill in front of it, and it is super depressing. FWIW, I recently lifted it, with 315/75/16 tires, still needs 2nd (obviously) but will run 65mph at only 4000 rpm. Somewhat better I guess.
speed burns... fuel.
If you can tolerate slowing down 5 mph, you will see another 1 mpg.
In CA, we are restricted by law to tow at 55. I consistently get 8 to 9 if not much wind. Speed up to 65 in Nevada, hello 7 mpg!
Just the nature of a gas engine making a lot of power.
For reference, the previous TV was a Ford 460. It consistently got 1-2 mpg less under identical circumstances.
What were you getting with the 6.0? From my converstations with other (honest) 6.0 owners, I'd guess 11 to 12 or so?
Just do as I do and continuouly remind yourself how much you're saving on maintenance and repair costs!!!! Unless you tow more than 20K per year, in which case diesel will be cheaper.
I live in SoCal, and if I tried to drive 55 mph, I would get run over by everyone, including the tractors and the CHP!! The other problem, the gas motor tows better with more rpm, I tried running in direct, but when rpm drop to 3000 going up the hill, it would down shift, that was at 60 mph, so towing slower, would just exacerbate the problem. If I was trying to go 75 mph, I could see the wind resistance problem compounding.
I also have a 1995 f250 w/ 460, 4.10 gear, but it is an extra xab and 2 wheel drive. It will get 7.5-8 mpg towing the same speed, same trailer, and same grade. To realy make matters worse, my old truck, a 2006 Silverado 1500 crew cab 2 wheel drive with 3.90 gears and the baby 4.8 v8 towed the same trailer, same grade, same gear and same mph as the v10! and it got 10 mpg to boot! Granted, the Super duty weighs almost 2000 lbs. more, but the engine is almost 50% bigger.
Don't get me wrong, the Ford is a much better truck, Just the v10 is quite the dissapointment for me.

Thats what my 2V gets pulling that much at 70-75. It gets as bad as 6 going 80+, but If I can not romp on it from stops and keep it to 55 I have gotten as high as 9.85 towing 10K in hills.
no, it's a 2002. It has all the stuff, just doesn't tow well. I suspect that it will probably tow anything in second gear at 60 mph. Just the nature of a small gas engine I guess. If you look at my thread Banks tuning vs. 5 star, you will see emperical data from a G-tech, showing the truck is as quick as it should be unloaded.
I think I will change plugs and O2 sensors, as I suspect they have never been done, maybe that will help. truck has 115k on it, and I have had it since 109k. I just don't get it, we had a 2v 32' motor home that we towed the same trailer with, and it would run just as well as my much lighter truck.
