I just bought a 1996 F150 4X4 with 115K miles, one problem I have is the ignition switch on the steering column is worn out. I found a replacement at Advance Auto for $15.00, how difficult is is to replace?
Turn the key to on (maybey it was run) poke a pin up thru the hole on the botton of the column, pull the keyswitch out and stick in the new one. Can't get much easier...
put key in ignition, turn lock to run position place a 1/8" drill in hole in trim shroud under lock cylinder. depress retsining pin while pulling lock cylynder to remove from column housing.
i took mine out went to a locksmith and had them rekey a new cylinder to match door key. take lock you bought to them and they can do this for you.

I have a 96 and mine has gone south also, I was told $50 from dealer, but heck, never tried the other auto stores. How much was it to re-key the new switch?
Thanks
I bought the new lock at Auto Zone and took it to a locksmith to have him match it to the door key, he said the lock I bought was junk and he could fix my original lock, he popped it out, drilled two holes, installed 2 roll pins, cleaned and lubed, reinstalled all for $24. He said that the anti-theft device in the lock wears out over time allowing the chrome part to turn, drilling and staking it solves the problem.
Thanks for the info Maddog. My '94 F150 has that problem. The ignition switch does not always line up with the lock when I remove the key so the alarm sounds when the door is opened. I will take it to a lock smith. Ford dealer wants $250 to replace it. Would be nice to knock the 0 off that price.
It's just as easy as everyone says. I replaced the one in my 96 in about 5 minutes start to finish...1 minute 15 seconds to replace the cylinder, 3 minutes 45 seconds to finish the beer I opened when I started. I'm a slow drinker.
I bought the cylinder from Casa Ford for around $50.
using channel lock pliers or vise grips, twist lock cylinder cap until it seperates from lock cylinder.
using a 3/8-inch drill, drill down middle of ign. lock key slot approxiamately 44mm (1-3/4-inch) until lock cyl. breaks loose from breakaway base of lock cylinder. remove lock cyl. and drill shavings from the lock cyl. housing.
remove retainer, washer, ign. switch and actuator. thouroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from casting.
carefully inspect lock cyl. housing for dammage from the above operation. if damage is apparent, housing must be replaced.
install:
replace lock cyl housing, if damaged.
install actuator and ign. switch as outlined.
install trim and elec. parts.
install new ign. lock cylinder as outlined
install steering wheel
connect battery
check lock cyl. operation
good luck, guicklook
