Here's another one:
Friend of mine surprised me the other day when he said he'd go for a 2wd f150 if the deal was right, and put a powertrax in it for off roading, etc. Anybody have any experiences with this for offroad, snow, towing? Interested if that really works. If so, I think I might be saving myself some money in the future...
Thanks
Is there even a Powertrax unit out there for our new trucks? I have a 2wd and would do it in a heartbeat if it's there. You will hear many people say that a 2wd with a locker will take you 99% of the places a 4x4 will (wouldn't try mud pits without 4wd though)
After many years of wheeling in my Jeep that is locked at both ends, I can tell you that there is some truth to this. A locker in ther rear will take you almost as far as 4wd. I would not say 99%, rather more like 75%. You really have no business going that last 25% in an expensive truck that isn't made for it anyways (remember I wheel a fully locked CJ at 10psi and don't care about body damage). I should add that I am assuming that you are airing down your tires to improve traction, too.
I do know that Tractech makes their Truetrac gear-type torque-biasing diff for the F150's. I have seen several of these in action and can tell you that they will take you nearly everywhere a locker will. It would be my FIRST choice.
They also make the Detroit Locker for it. Go here: http://www.tractech.com/docs/TT-List-LTPM1004.pdf
