Is a M5OD manual tranny a mazda tranny? I've been reading that it will fit into a 1989 4x4 f150?

Yes. Although, there is a better choice. The ZF is a much stronger unit.

ZF & M5OD clutch components are interchangeable. For a ZF tranny, any year should work for a 4x4, since the speedo cable is in the transfer case, for 2wd, only up to 92 or 93 has speedo cable provisions. For clutch pedal and cylinders, you should be able to interchange from any 87-96 truck. As for bellhousings, these trannies have integral bellhousings, I believe the M5OD has choice between small block bolt pattern and little truck (Ranger) bolt pattern. The ZF comes in small block, big block, and diesel varieties.
