I am looking for some creative alternatives to hacking my doors apart to find some room a set of speakers. Currently I have 2 6x9's in the carpeted boxes on the tranny hump but they need to go. I was just wondering what you guys did to your trucks...or is cutting the door or trim panel the best option? Any thoughts, sugestions or pictures would be greatly appreciated.
Hate to see doors or even trim panels cut up but one of the few other spots seem to be an overhead consul from an after market source. I thought of placing speakers facing down under the bottom of the dash. May have poor sound quality but would save those poor old doors/panels. Decided to do with any sound system for now, will decide later when I get much more done to the truck.
Problem is, There just isn't any room in the cabs of our trucks to work with, and the door panel covers are easy to work with. Door panels work, Ford uses them today.
Move the tank out of the cab and make a speaker box to replace it. Probably more trouble than you're after though.Does anyone have the headliner with the speakers? Like it?-J.Banks-
I like these two good ideas. To cut the door panels is better than cutting the doors. I have seen a custom install from a stereoshop using the door panel area to build a speaker enclosure with plwood. This was a very serious system with room for large speaker and several smaller ones in the space. Never did see it after it was finished but I am sure the plywood was covered with cloth material. This was in a 76 F250 4x4 customized truck, a very neat unit. Wish that I had taken pics but didn`t have a camera at the time. They also built an overhead consul for more speakers.
I used my door panels..( Got a set of spares though ) Put some 6.5" in there. Also put a set of 3.5's in the dash, where the stock "one" was. I got a set of 6x9's I need to add into that system. It'll be interesting to find a place, since I plan on 2 10" Subs behind the seat..
Someone "installed" speakers in the doors of my truck before I got it, ugliest mess you ever saw. 6x9-ish holes trimmed up with black duct tape. If you go to JC Whitney and paste ZX380018Y in to the search box. That's an overhead-mount "sound bar" that isn't quite as cool as the full headliner they used to sell, but still might work (might do well behind the seat / above the tank, too).
here is what i did, I removed the headliner and fiberglassed the hell out of the back of it made 2 spacers and mounted 2, 4 inch speakers, I made a plate to mount two 3 inch in the original dash location, then i cut those precious deluxe door panels and added 2, 3-way Blaupunkt 6x9's with the cd player it sounds awsome and when i add the dynamat to the doors it will be better. by cutting the door panels i can always go back to stock by just replacing them.
If you look up the 4x6 speaker grilles.... they were used by Stangs, Cougars and trucks from this era and it would not look so unusual on the bottom of the door

These mount under your dash in the stock speaker location! Wish I saw this before I cut my door panels
Take a pic of the interior for me. Preferably through the back glass. I THINK there may be enough room to make small (big enough for 6.5" speakers) enclosures under the dash, down by the kick panel. Then all you need to do is mount a sub under or behind the seat. If it were me I'd make a box that was just deep enough for the sub, but long enough to satisfy the chamber volume needed. It may run under the entire length of the seat, but it will sound good.
The plan for my truck is to pull out the back window and put a 1/4 cab canopy in the bed with a boot replace the window. That way I will have a inclosed space it install the amps and speakers. The 1/4 cab canopy I was looking at has a rear window in it.
I took out the gas tank.(seat also) On each side of the cab, behind door jamb, is a space that is perfect for speakers. I Cut two 7 by 14 piieces of metal from an old computer case, Cut out the holes (oval 6 by 9 )+a hole for gas spout hose. Spot welded with a wire feed to the cab. Keep side where gas goes in speaker low enough for hose. Put gas tank back in . I haven't finished yet so I do not know if it will sound good. But should work. I'm in the middle of a restoration and this is just another project.
