The plan for my truck is to pull out the back window and put a 1/4 cab canopy in the bed with a boot replace the window. That way I will have a inclosed space it install the amps and speakers. The 1/4 cab canopy I was looking at has a rear window in it.
A great idea that will give lots of room for speakers and an amp. I don`t have a canopy but this makes alot of sense as long as the amps and speakers are out of sight and secure.
Why are you people choppin up your trucks for speakers?
Get a set of bucket seats and build a console. If you have a column shift, there is a buttload of room for amps, crossovers, speakers, and not to mention, you can put the CD player in it without choppin the dash, and have a cupholder or two.

remove your precious door panels, use them as a template to construct your own panels that hold speakers. I've done it on my 68 back in high-school and now on my 67/69 project. It's not that hard, looks good and sounds great.
Looks Good Greg..I like those custom panels you made...How many watt Juke box and amp are running in that dude??

I've got a portable MP3 player plumbed to an Alpine 4 channel amp in the seat that's good for about 300 watts total split across those door speakers and a single 10" sub behind the seat.
the factory radio is in place and completely indpependent of my jams.
In my 71 F100 Ranger XLT single cab I had 2 6x9's that set right above the fuel tank facing it... They still made a little contact with it though and I still had to move the seat up. Not very comfortable, but it worked and put out good sound. I did order 2 6x9 boxes, not the truck ones, and cut them down as much as I could depth wise and left it open, and let the back of the seat be the back of the box. I used the springs on the back of the seat for support for the boxes. It was an install that I could pull out in 2 seconds and no damage was done to the truck. CD player was under the dash to the driver's right.
I installed 6x9's in the rear corner piller area between the rear window and door at head height, in my 78'. I plan on doing the same thing in my 71' crew.
The area in the 78' was a little more angled to the center than the 71', which is pretty much faceing each other.
Up in the Pillar Area, does it ever seem to get annoying with them blasting right there? Ive looked there many time, but liking my music loud and being Im 6'5 , it doesnt seem like a good spot.. Your thoughts?
It was loud. With my crew though; they will far enough back this time.
My 94' ext. cab has them in that location from FOMOCO.
It would be something to think about before doing it. To fix it would be a pain.
MacOffutt, you being 6'5" that would put the speakers at your belly button. Your a tall man to be in a single cab.
Just playin. You might want to place them up there, maybe with a rag on the back of them, to get a similar effect.
Yea I know. I have a almsot permanent hunch from drivin the truck. But I love it. I see what your sayin about the fixing the pillars if I didnt like it, and thats why im looking hard into the decision. Imma hit up the store back home who I want to do the intall and see what they think.
The one thing about putting anything in the door panals or kick panals is water. Water coming down the inside of the doors or body will not be good for speakers that are not water proof.

Good point. It would not be a bad idea to use marine use 6x9's in the doors if you are going that route.
The '71 and '72's that came with the factory stereo had 6" x 9" speakers mounted under the door panel, near the front of the door with a black plastic grill cover that simply had the word 'stereo' molded into it...If you had real nice original door panels, like from a Ranger or an Explorer,I wouldn't suggest cutting holes in them as the repro's don't look nearly as good...
