I'll throw in my $0.02 worth. I looked at the Ford brochure for my '71 and saw they had 6x9 speakers installed in the lower door. By seeing where Ford put them and looking at the door it was easy to see where factory speakers would have been installed. I measured carefully and cut the oval out with an air-powered hacksaw. It looks great, sounds great and should I sell the truck, I will give the buyer the cutouts which can easily be welded back in and finished, not any different than welding in a replacement body panel..
I couldn't find the URL where I found a copy of the Ford brochure, so I put it up on
my web site. http://www.atnip.net/71f100-sales-brochure
Look at 15.jpg and you can see the rectangular speaker grill mounted below the door panel and toward the front of the door.
If you look at you door you can see that the speaker hole can only be made just so far forward or the hole won't be deep enough for a speaker (there is some structure there).
I measured my 6x9 speaker and determined the fartherest forward location I could mount the speaker and still have room for the magnet. I taped a piece of 6 mil plastic just above the speaker on the inside so that water will be deflected and drip off below the bottom of the speaker. I did NOT 'seal' the back of speaker.
I was a little concerned about the sound being muddled down that close to the floor but I've was very suprised at how well it does sound. I have even had several people comment on how well it sounds. I have a 15W AM/FM Tape player that I bought from Crutchfield that fits in the original mounting hole without have to cut it up at all.
Can't say what it would sound like with a BIG megawatt amp but I like the sound the big speakers give.
Thanks for the URL as already stated. It looks like that is where my 6.5' are. Maybe I can move those to a different spot, considering they are a bit smaller. We will see.
I just got my 6x9s put in where the picture showed. They are sitting right next to my 6.5's. I was kind of nervous on how it would look and sound but I must say it looks good and sounds even better. This Weds. I am adding a Amplifier to to 6x9s cause they are running of the deck and dont have much potential. When I get home Ill load a few pics up to the computer and post them in my gallery. Got my new head unit installed also. Looks good, they used a Volkswagon adaptor, turned upside down. Looks so much better. Then my hacked up old one.. Wish I wouldnt have made that mistake. =(
