i'm about to buy a 91 F150 with a 300, i think it might be useful to get a code reader. were can i buy a code reader for the old OBD I? i can only find them for the OBD II.
I'm not sure where to get the machine. I'd invest in a 6 foot wire, but that's me... it's simple to pull the codes by counting the blinks on the check engine light.
The have them in the JC whitney catalog for about 25 bucks. However, you can get a piece of wire, ground out the self test imput (the one little indepentent connecter at the ECU test harness), turn the ignition to run, and the codes will flash on the check engine light. It's cheap, but in my opinion, hard to interpret, so i would just buy a code reader.
i was reading how to do to the self test with the wire, and that sounds real complicated.
i'm new to the fuel injection world i'm used to working on my 66 mustang
it's wierd how i can completely rebuild an engine, transmission, rear end, and pretty much anything else in a car, but then when it comes to wires and computers i'm completely stumped
I'm swearing by the wire trick. What you're doing is grouding the test program, and you count the blinks... it really is quite simple if you try it 2-3 times.
hmm, stick with that website. it may talk technical, but the process itself is simple. All you're doing is grounding that wire, and counting blinks and pauses.
I bought mine at Advance Auto.....$30.......I tried counting the blinks twice.....kept looking down at the paper instead of the light and spent way too much time trying to figure out how long 2 and 4 seconds was....
Advance had them in the store but when I got ready to buy it I went on their website and saw they offered 2-3 different ones. Mine is the INNOVA 3145 model. I'd bet any auto parts store has them but I didn't check any others.

I just make "tally" marks: llll, slash. I don't have to take my eyes off the light.
I also use an Actron device, about 25$, their cheapest one. It beeps (helps) as well as flashes the light. NO DISPLAY! Just keeps me from having to go around the door, or hang over the window sill.
Still nothing that can't be accomplished with a paper clip.
