First CAR was a '47 Caddie my dad bought for 50 bucks with a cracked block and a shot tranny, gave me half ownership for my 12th birthday (That was, let's see, umm, WAY too many years ago!) But my first vehicle was a truck, when I was 11. A Studebaker 3/4 ton, about 1953 vintage or thereabouts. A neighbor gave it to my dad and he didn't want it, so he said I could have it. It had been sitting for years, but I got it running. -TD
1957 Ford Fairlane 500. Perfect white paint with two tone white and blue interior. It had a 312 cubic inch V8 and somewhere along the line it had been converted to a 4 speed manual transmission. As one of my dear departed relatives once said after going for a ride along, "Damn son, this thing runs like a scalded dog." Like a lot of you guys, that car is one I would love to have back.
1970 Torino, 351C-2V, C-6. Looked and ran like new (this was in '79). Soon after I got it, I put a set of low & wide BFG T/A Radials on it, ditched the wire hubcaps, and put corporate Ford "dogdish" hubcaps on with beauty rings. Man, I loved that car. Drove it four years, then sold it. Regretted it ever since. Anybody else wish Ford still painted their engines blue?
1966 F-100 Had a 240 6-cylinder and 3-speed on the column. The bearings in the column were worn out so it stuck in 2nd and 3rd gears most of the time. Bought it for $200 and drove it for 4 years then sold it for $600 to buy the 66 f-250 that I have now.
‘62 Ford Galaxy 500 with a ‘58 police interceptor 352ci motor, three speed on the floor. Bought it for $100. Had sat under a tree for a year. First time I washed it I used Comet cleanser. Had to double clutch it to shift gears. You learn a lot about cars when the first car is like this one.
I'm still driving my first car - 1986 Taurus wagon. 3.0/auto, A/C, 197k miles. So far it's taught me about brakes, struts, shocks, CV joint driveaxles, ball joints, air conditioning, electrical gremlins, and probably some other things I've forgotten. It's take quite a bit of work but I paid nothing for it and parts are dirt-cheap, so I can't complain.
My first vehicle was a 1981 F250 4x4. The motor and clutch went out at the same time, so my dad said I could have it if I would fix it. I did a cheap R&R on the engine, slapped in a cheap clutch and rawdogged the hell out of it for 7 years. It was a daily driver, mud truck, party mobile, and everything else you can think of. I sold it the week before I got married for a "better" 92 F150 supercab. Big mistake - every day I wish I had the original Green Submarine back.
