A lot of people complain about how Barry Bonds will stand at the plate and admire his homeruns after he hits one. Griffey Jr. does it also and no one complains. So does Big Mac. The one person who irks me is Sammy Sosa. He shows up the pitcher by doing his little bunny hop when he hits one and his sign language to the camera afterwards. Why doesn't anyone get p.o. ed about him? Man, if I were a big league pitcher, I would plunk him in the ribs each time he did that to me. I don't mind the others admiring their bombs because they trot the bases and get in the dugout... but Sammy...
So what? If I could hit 70 homers in one season I'd be jumping up and down too. What about football players? Last I saw they did those stupid dances after they made a touch down. Is that not the same thing? It's a celebration, let them have fun!
Jake, there is nothing wrong with celebrating. Do it in the dugout by highfiving your teammates, shaking hands, head pats, whatever. There is an old, unwritten rule in baseball lore... don't show up the pitcher. I admit Sosa is a dang good player but keep the theatrics in the dugout. In football, the elder players keep the celebration modest as they should.
Maybe Sosa should show off a little. He is a FAR BETTER hitter than Bonds and Big Mac as well. I never thought the bunny hop was a "showboating" type of thing. I do think the silly Barry Bonds strut is showboating. Is Sosa showing off when he sprints to right field? No, he is paying respect to the fans in Wrigleys right field bleachers. Man, I bet you thought Pete Rose was a show off too. People who don't understand the game confuse hustle with showing off because most athletes are lazy at the pro level in all sports. Good Lord man when Bonds gets walked it takes him 5 min. to take off the body armor he wears to the plate. When he hits a homer it takes him a couple of minutes just to strut his weak ##### to 1st base. If Bonds played anywhere but San Fran he would not have 40 hr's right now. They built that stadium just for him and just happened to put in the shortest right field wall in the league. Maybe people don't think Sosa is showing off because he is a good guy and Bonds is a punk. Bonds has no respect for the game, the fans, or his teamates. Sosa has all those things, in spades.
maybe you all have grown old and forgotten that these men are PAID to play a GAME!!!!!! they are paid to have fun, that is what they do for a living, besides with out all the little quirks and sideshows it would become boring and no one would care to watch, i think all of you just need to get out there with your buds and play a few rounds of baseball or football and see who does the most showboating, last i saw the 45 yr olds do a longer touchdown dance than the 21 yr olds....

Ahh...that must be why he hit 70 homeruns in 1998...oh wait...that was McGwire wasn't it?

Just in case your interested in the facts, Bonds has hit more homeruns on the road than he has at home...29 vs 27...
LAST EDITED ON 06-Sep-01 AT 08:17 AM (EST)[p]Well there bubba No he didn't hit 70 he hit 66. He also bats over 300. As of today it was .317 and he leads the majors in rbi's. He has 53 homers in a line up with no protection. Last I saw Big Mac had 23 HR and was below the Mendoza line (you do know what that is don't you?) in one of the best line ups in the majors. Big Mac is a fine power hitter but as I said before Sosa is by far the better hitter. It's not just about the homers homer.

Well first off my name isn't bubba and Sosa is hitting .316, second McGwire has been injured for a good portion of the season, third yes I know what the Mendoza line is, fourth Bonds is hitting .312 in a similarly unprotected situation and he has 58 homers and a better OBP, finally my name ain't homer either.
Isn't Bonds protected by the defending NL MVP? I would hardly call that unprotected. Don't get me wrong I like Big Mac alot but the fact remains, he is a homerun hitter only! He is the best at hitting longballs when healthy. I just think more goes in to being a good hitter that homeruns. I read a story the other day that said Bonds put on 20 lbs. of muscle in the off season. I played enough sports in my life to know that you can only gain 20 lbs. of muscle in one off season with the help of steroids. Maybe that explains his bloated power numbers along with Pac Bell.
Kent is not performing at MVP pace this year. He's hitting .293 compared to .334 last year so I wouldn't say he's doing a great job of defending his title or protecting Bonds since Barry has 145 walks so far this season. Sosa only has 99. Also Sosa strikes out a lot more than Bonds, 136 compared to 85.
Don't believe everything you read. Is Bonds on 'roids? Maybe...who knows? Does he play in a hitters ball park? Probably but that seems to be the latest rage in stadiums. (Right now he has 31 HRs at home vs. 29 on the road. Sosa must have the same advantage because he's 27 home vs. 26 road.) Is Bonds a hell of a ball player with a shot at beating Big Mac for the HR title? Absolutely...
