i have never heard what headers and glass packs sound like on a 300 inline 6 I've never owned a six cylendar before, always eights. I want the throaty loud sound again. can I get it with a six, and what would I have to do? Or if you could describe what it would sound like i'd be appreciative.
I have a set of Clifford Performance "Street Rod" headers on my '91. These are a dual-outlet, unequal-length setup, which I had Jet Hot coated after I ground out the welding slag and extra sheet metal at the joints. I reduced to 2-1/2 inches at the collectors, and fabricated a "Y" pipe into a Camaro 3-inch high flow cat from Random Technologies, and ran that into an existing Gibson 3-in. single pipe cat back system.
The 300 loved the cat back system, and the header/hiflow cat really woke it up! Don't expect a race engine, sixes are torque motors but you will be able to outpull most 350 size V-8's. You'll really feel it in the seat of the pants, and pick up some mileage, too! This setup has a nice, truck rumble, somewhat louder than stock, with a bit of hot rod "rap".
DO NOT RUN DUAL EXHAUSTS!!! Read that again...true dual exhausts on an inline-six are just plain loud, and have a snotty tone more at home on a sports car.
I have an 83' 300 I. I blew it out, w/ street cam, racing pistons, 9.5:1 compression, hydr. lifters, dual pacesetter headers, offenhauser intake, holley 4brl 390 cfm carb.
Dual exhaust with a nice set of Flowmasters, sounds great, at idle sounds like V-8 growl or even better, at 1500 rpms it's raspy just like a Mustang!!! and @ 2000 rpms it just rows...
I am very pleased!!!
Although I had to machine the correct type of washers to help hold on all that good stuff to the head, learning experience!
I agree with the above comment. I have not done as much to my truck as this guy, but i did take one of my cat's off and put on a flow master with dual exaust. True it is not true dual exaust, but it has the appearance of one. It still sounds pretty good. I also put a new idler on it which made the truck idle higher, and that made it sound a good bit better. My suggestion to you is cut off the right cat if you have two, put on a flow master and have fun with it.
hey, you sound like the guy i need to talk to. i have an old 65 and was interested in putting in a 300 and hoping it up. so what does it run like? what parts did ya use and where did ya get them? any info will help.
I bought a '93 300ci from my dad. He told me he put a glasspack on it a short while ago, and I figured he must be getting old and consufing it with some other vehicle, but when I got to crawling around underneath I saw that it was true - guess the two cats silence it so much that the truck still sounds about as quiet as off the lot.
I have a glasspack on my 82 300, it is quieter than with a blown out muffler, I ran it around for a few days off at the cat, nice LOUD 8ish sound, put the Glasspack on, and it has a nice tone at idle, but, at speed, it is as quiet as any other 300, might have something to do with it only turning 1600 at 60...

I have a headman header that I willbe putting on my '67 F-100 (240ci), I have heard a few 300s with dual exhaust, true duals with loud mufflers does sound sorta "different" I think it sounds OK but it is something I would have to get use to.
What I plain to do is run true duals but have a "H" pipe like 5.0 Mustangs. I think that will help it sound more V8 like.
