I have a 2000 F550 7.3/six speed with 275k on it. When I start upshifting from first(not low) and rev up the motor past say 2100 to 2300 rpms before the shift the motor starts hesitating and smoking terribly.I pretty much have to shift before 2000 rpms for it not to lose power and smoke. It does the same in 2nd. When I get up to speed in third and start the rpms up in that gear it seems alright and revs on up with little or no hesitation or smoke,and also does alright in fourth and fifth. I dont know if the motor is just worn or something is wrong but it has very little power getting off the line because of this and I get passed by just about everything on the road. Also there isnt any check engine lights on.

The first thing I would check is a badly clogged air filter.
You know I thought the same thing and it was dirty and I replaced it tonite but of course it didnt make much of a difference. I am going to check out he whole air box and related induction parts tom. Would the fuel filter make any difference? I bought one but I havent put it in yet. I bought this truck thinkin that I would buy a wrecked newer truck for a drivetrain if I had to but I would rather use this motor for a while. if I can. As far as other problems:It jumps out of fourth gear and is somewhat hard starting when cold,shifts pretty rough in general, but once I get it up to 35 mph or so it accelarates pretty good and once up to 55 it does even better so I know it hast to have some legs left and for 275k Im pretty impressed. But right now it is the slowest truck on the road 0-30,and I couldnt even imagine trying to tow with it.
