I have a 1988 Ford F-150 with a 302 V8 and an Automatic w/overdrive tranny. I am trying to make the truck louder and I want it to cackle. I took off the stock muffler and I took off both catylitic converters. The truck has true duals with 12" thrush glasspacks and the pipes exit under the rear bumper. I have 22" chrome tips on the end of the pipes for a droning sound. Can anyone help me please?? I really need some helpful info!! Thanks
Kyle
Usually the shorter the pipe the louder it gets. I see alot of people take and dump the exhaust right under the back of the cab with 3 or 4 inch tips.
Also I wanted to know if taking off the cats made a big difference in power-low end. Im thinking about puting a high flow cat on mine but Im curious if it really helps.I need more pulling power.
Yea, I was thinking about shortening the pipes, thanks for the reply. Do you have any other ideas? As far as torque goes, there was a definate boost to power in my 5.0 litre after I took the cats off. The truck runs faster, smoother, and I have noticed that when I tow trailers or wagons it is easier than before. I can really tell on a steep hill, its easier towing now. Plus, its a lot cheaper than buying a cat-back system. I thought about dual flowmasters, but my muffler shop said it would be above $400, I spent about $200 for my straight pipes and mufflers.
I've got a 90 F-150 302 EFI, full lenghth dynomax headers, and true duals with 12" glass-packs and I love it. I love the loud sound, although the police around here have already given me dirty looks. Increase in power was terrific. Also, did the shop that did your exaust say anything about not having a converter messing up your fuel-injection. One guy I went said there was NO to make headers and true dual work with ford's fuel injection, UNLESS of course I was willing to give him $550! Ended up getting it done for $225 and it ain't given any trouble.
I haven't had any problems with my engine since I removed the cats. I did it myself and the guy who put the straight pipe on for me didn't say I would have any problems. What kind of pipes do you have on your truck? What type of sound is it, a lot of cackling or just a deep droning. Mine is pretty deep, but I want it to cackle also. I guess it will cackle more after the glasspack breaks in. DO you have any good ideas for me? And yea, the power raise was great for me also!!
I'm running a welded dual exhaust with 18" glass packs, with full length pipes under the bumper. If I have someone following me they say it's loud, of course with it dumping straight out the rear, I don't hear it to much until I stand on it. If noise is what you're after then you might try a shorter set of glass packs. Of course when you do like the above post, the federales will start looking at you.
I've heard that if you run your truck hard to get the exaust real hot and then spray water on them it will break up alot of the fiberglass and make it louder. I haven't tried it because i'm basically satisfied with mine as is. But hey, if it doesn't sound good, glasspacks are cheap. Also, summit racing sells a tip muffler, which is tunable, by swapping out internal cones, you change the sound. Might want to check that out.
Try duals w/headers and no mufflers. You'll have enough back pressure, and its the loudest your gonna get. I have a 93 F-150 302/e4od, headers and 2 1/4" ss pipes with echo tips. Good enough for me.
I have a 86 f150 ext. cab long bed truck with 2 1/4 inch aluminized mendral bent exhaust that dumps right behind the rear wheel out to the side with 22 inch glass packs with no convertors.
when i bought the truck it had two cats and a glass pack. i could spin my brand new goodyear work horse radials 31by10.5by15 about 3 feet from a dead stop with no power braking. after i cut the complete exhaust system off and took it to the muffler shop and paid 253 dollars for my (wink wink)1979 ford dual exhaust I took it to the same spot and hit the gas pedal wheee I spun that tire all the way across the intersection somewhere around 20 feet of rubber and the exhaust is quiet with a slight mellow tone but once you hit the gas its loud almost to loud i think for my own taste. .......its a 302 fi engine
