Maybe try going to a reputable auto glass shop and tell them what you have, your situation and their recommendations for cleaning.
I wonder if there is a fine plastic film on both sides of the glass that got damaged.
I remember when I worked for a Buick dealership, one mechanic used a razor to scrape off a sticker on the windshield of a Riv and damaged the glass because of that plastic film.
I've got an 97 T-bird that has a dirty windshield problem. When it's dry you can see through it fine but when it's snowing or raining I can just barely see through it. I've cleaned it and tried new wipers. It's almost like the surface is pitted and the water beads or rings around the pot holes in the glass and then mucks up the view.
I think my next step to clean it will include a hammer and my comprehensive insurance policy!
The Stoners does work well. Can also buff the glass with a non-silicone polish. Amazing! Son's van has constant build up of @#$% on the inside of the windshield. I have some silicone-free body shop compound that removes just about anything. Because it is silicone-free no streaking.
I appreciate all the responses, but unfortunately it's going to be a couple of days before I can try any of them. I had to fly to L.A. early this morning and I'll be here for a few days. I will definately post back when I get a chance to try these methods out. Except for the Windex one. Me and my old buddy Windex tried as hard as we could, but it just didn't work.
Try what xlt4me said . Works well for me. And NEVER use amour all on the inside of your truck. When it's closed up the heat will get vapor residue all over the glass inside. Plus, in my experience, it will do more harm than good. I put rain x on all of my exterior glass, including the mirrors, with good results. Just folow the directions. Some car wash places will just spray your truck with a liquid wax and let it dry, leaves a terrible haze on the glass that you'll have to use thinner or alcohol to remove.
i've heard pour coca cola or pepsi on the whole windshield..then wash it off immediately with a water hose.
I think that's for battery acid, not windshields- coke won't be very good for the paint, so if you do do that make sure it drains through the gutter and doesn't go onto the hood.
Yeah, it's probably just the plastic vapors, but it's also spring, and that means pollen. See if it keeps on into the summer, and if not then it's probably just pollen.
Also try some rain-x AFTER you get it clean- won't hurt, but if you do it before it's clean you run the risk of locking the dirt in.
envirocon, i have alot of troubel with streaking on my o3, talked to a bodyshop owner. she said it can be fron the new type glass they are using now. i think its called solar glass, it is a very soft glass, and pits easily. thousands of tiny pits mixed with dirt and water equal heavy streaking. dont know that for sure but it sounds possible..
I would suggest dish detergent for cleaning the windshield and wiper blades.Repeat the cleaning process a couple of times.Rinse thoroughly.Like 1956MarkII said, you probably picked up some contaminant from the road.Follow up with Windex for sparkling clean. This worked for me in the past.Good Luck!
