well this is a kicker right in the middle of winter and my a/c wont shut off. i turn my switch off and it shuts off thats ok but when i kick it over to defrost and throw the switch over on hot my a/c stays running all the time the compresser kicks on and off. i looked at all the conections and everything seems to be fine and my a/c just started doing this.since i didnt run the a/c for a couple of months i kicked it on let it run for awhile then shut it off well since then its been staying on . i have it un hooked now from the compresser but my heater doors dont operate i only have vents now. 1986 ford 302 ext cab looking for some ideas to fix this myself.
I'm not sure that I fully understand your problem. The AC compressor is supposed to run on defrost, at least on most vehicles. If its not heating it could be a bad cable on your temp. control. If this is the case you can manually open the heat doors(under the hood where the heater hoses go into the heater core housing). I this truck is new enough to have vacuum controls I can't help you there.
86 Ford Guy ,
The A/c is designed to run in the defrost mode because cool air can handle moist air better than warm air . You should still have warm air from the heater core , if not , like was mentioned in the previous post , you have a cable problem . Just by the laws of physics and the way the A/c is designed , in colder outside air , the A/c will only cycle on briefly , just enough to remove the moisture from the inside of the truck . My A/c operates in the defrost as well as the defrost windshield setting and the defrost / floor setting .

when you put it to heat selection check your heater hoses. do they get hot at least the supply to the heater core? if they do check the pressure switch on the reciever it may be stuck shut. didconnect the plug to the reciever to see if the compresser shuts off.
well then i just learned something i did not know the a/c was to run while on defrost. cause everytime the compressor kicked on the engine would almost die or it would die when the compressor kicked on. when i opened the hood to see why the truck would die i seen the compressor kick on and there went the truck it die so i thought the a/c was stuck on.( wheres my sign)but that dont explain way i dont have window defrost, floor or mix. just vents. the air is hot but wont come out the hole i want it. and why does my a/c kick on and kill the truck? its fine on the a/c mode. i thank you guys for teaching me this stuff anymore ideas for me much welcomed. ill hook the a/c back up but i have to find the problem with the truck why it dies when the compressor kicks on. (it sounds fine the compressor)
The flappers that direct the air flow are vacuum operated. I suspect that either one of the hoses is off or that the vacuum valve that is attached to the A/C Heater selecter switch is broken. I had one break in a 78 Cougar. I could hear a vacuum leak while driving the car. It wasn't hard or expensive to replace.
I don't know if a vacuum leak from these locations could cause your engine problem.
