Identify this part?

1994 E250 4.9L C6 running perfectly prior to this.

#VF2TB-10D840-AA
Approx 1"H x 2.5"W x 3"L under the dash. It has what looks like a small computer type speaker on a printed board with 7 spade terminals on it. With that many terminals is seems it would have more functions than just a door chime. Anyone know what all this thing does?

The problems arose after the van was hit by lightning. Blew 2 tires, blew 130amp alternator, melted this piece, speedo and odometer don't work. Everything else including the dome lite works. It seems to shift properly.
The speedo is electronic.
Will it hurt the tranny to drive it without the speedo working?
Is there a fuse for the speedo and odometer?
Would appreciate any suggestions.

I am not sure what the mystery box is, I can't find the part number. Maybe if you list the wire colors, we could find it on a diagram. I good guess would be it's something like a GEM module. This is a module Ford puts in their later vehicles that does all the timing and interlock functions for chimes, domelight timing, and various other things.

Your tranny should be ok as long as you feel all the shift points you normally did, and the rpms of the motor sound the same. If it seems to be missing the last shift(the lock-up convertor) then the rpms will be a little bit higher, and then the tranny may have a tendency to overheat on the interstate. The only reason this may happen is if there is something wrong with the speed sensor, which goes to the cruise, speedo and computer for the engine.

I would go ahead and check all the fuses anyway, just to be sure. Make sure you look under the hood too. You may have a fuse box under there too.
