i'm getting a little oil starting to drip into the floor of my 91 f-350, i've switched to tractor hydraulic fluid instead of power steering fluid, and it seems to have quit leaking, but i know its going. is there a rebuild kit available, i understand a new hydra-boost is very expensive. anyone repaired one before, i took it to the only mechanic around these parts, it sat in his yard for 3 days so today i told him i would pick it up. i guess i will have to fix it. mechanics are scarce in the ruidoso, new mexico area. everyone says stay away from the ford dealer.
If the leak is where the brake input rod is going into hydo-bost then that is called the input seal. I have no breakdown info for parts, have you tried a power steering additive that swells old seals......... might buy you some time.
thanks PLC: i checked with western auto here and can get a rebuilt unit for 149.00,, not bad. for the time being it has quit leaking after i strated using tractor hydraulic fluid instead of ps fluid. i will order the unit and as soon as i can find someone to install it, i will be in business. also i purchased some diesel kleen cetane boost, the container says i can get 6 cetane numbers by doubling the dosage. my question to you is, will that hurt the engine to double up on the dosage. the cetane boost has helped my engine smoking at the higher altitudes. it still smokes, but is much better.
Harleyjohn45,
For what it is worth where is the fluid leaking at?
A friend of mine had a 99 Super Duty that was starting to leak kinda bad.
Notice I said had.
One evening he noticed white steam coming out from under the hood.
When he opened the hood it burst into flames.
The fire was concentrated in the hydra boost area.
He thought it was electrical but I have to wonder.
His truck was a total loss though.
ouch dave:
since i don't buy full coverage on old trucks, i better keep an eye on it. my truck had formed an oil spot on the floor mat right between the clutch pedal and the brake pedal. i went to the auto parts store to get a clutch master cylinder, only to find out it was not brake fluid, but power steering fluid. i had been losing ps fluid, so to slow it down i started using tractor hydraulic fluid. in the last week i have not seen any signs of fresh oil on the floor. i know its on the way out.
""my question to you is, will that hurt the engine to double up on the dosage.""
The double dose may influence the timing slightly I would think.......can't believe it would damage anything but others may know better than me........
His was leaking on the outside of the firewall. Also he did have comprehensive coverage that will cover the fire damage. But it will not come close to replacing his truck.
