My frame on my 85 f-150 4x4 is bent at the rear axel. I was told it can be fixed for a couple hundred dollars but I'm leaning more towards just doing a frame swap. Can anyone tell me what other frames I can use? I was told that the frame I use must have twin i-beams or double i-beams.
Thanks,
Rick
You can use an 80-96 F150 2wd or 4wd chassis. Assuming a long bed, you can also use a F250 or 350 2wd chassis. An 80-81 frame is not very desireable however. The 92-96 chassis will work, but, due to the addition of a crumple zone, your front bumper won't bolt on. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. If you get a 2wd chassis, you'll have to swap your transmission crossmember over, and, on a F150 2wd, the rear springs are 2½" wide, instead of the 3" of your 4x4 ones.
This is no small project, but, if you have a good place to work, it shouldn't take more than a couple weekends to accomplish.
It is a long box, so your saying to keep things simple I should find a 4x4 frame between 83-91? Is there a differnce between f-250, and f-350 frames that would cause any mojor problems?
Thanks
Rick
If you go with a F250 or 350 frame, you want a 2wd one. The 4wd trucks are leaf sprung up front, and the suspension uses different mounting points(I-beams are shorter) on the engine crossmember than the half ton coil sprung unit.
An 82-91 chassis is the easiest thing to swap under your truck. Even if you get a 4x4 chassis, you may still have to change, or re-locate the transmission crossmember due to the different transmissions and transfer cases offered, but, it's a bolted in crossmember, so it's not a big thing to deal with.
I'm going to look at some parts trucks tomorrow, I'll let you know what I come across and maybe you can give me some input on what to go with. Ideally, later this year I would like to put a suspension lift on but that wont be until this winter at the earliest. But for now, I would just like to get the old girl drving. Need to keep the 4wheel drive to get down the logging paths back into my cottage.
Thanks
Rick
One of my dad's friend's has a 87 f-150 2wd. There's a little surface rust on the frame but nothing major. Would there be any benefits to go with a f-250 or f-350 frame that a f-150 frame would not have?
