I bit the bullet tonight and orderd A Diablo tuner. I put my Summit 5" exhaust on this Monday, and now the truck surges when cruising. I don't know much about diesels, but it feels like a gas moter feels when it is running lean. Is that possible? Is there some way I am supposed to reset the computer now so it can relearn the air/fuel ratio? I figured the programmer would give it the fuel it needs.
Again, I am used to working on gas engines. This is my first diesel.
My next mod is the Napa 6637 filter mod. I have to do something while I'm waiting for the programmer to come in. ;D
digracer, you wont be sorry for buying the predator. running that big of exhaust you WILL see a sizable difference with a tune. you just need MORE air, hang on! LOL
I dont know about the surging issue or what your truck is but I have an 01 F250 ext. cab 8ft. bed and muffler removed and I have a predator tuner that I have not set over 60 horse setting and you would not beleive the way it wakes up that motor. Will smoke the tires easily good out of the hole and more top end than I want.I am really happy with it .Only thing is I think tranny needs shift mod. Dosent quite shift the way I would Like it to.
Istull.... i'm wondering what settings you used on your predator for the tranny firmness and shift points and did any adjustments you made make a difference...?
I set it for firm shift and normal only have never set it on hard I guess because firm is pretty firm and that is as far as I went. Like I said I also never had it over 60 hp setting either

if you don't have gauges... don't go over the 60hp setting... is there an adjustment for shift points with your tuner..?
well that is supposedly one of the advantages of the predator tuner... you have lots of settings and you can put them together into different combinations to see what makes your truck work best for what you are using it for... i am sure a sonax valve upgrade for your tranny will help it run better, but if you do that you may find you have to reset your tranny settings back to stock on the tuner... i'm not sure about that but that's what i've read... do a little experimenting with it if you get a chance... be really scientific about it... do one change at a time and see how this affects the tranny's performance... then make another change... it may take some time but i would love to know what you think as i am planning on getting one of those tuners soon...!
Thanks for the advice guys. I can't wait to get the programmer! I don't "plan" on running more than the 60hp tune, but a pyrometer is in my future plans just in case.
You're going to like your new Diablo Programmer. I would advise you to get all of your gauges installed first. Since you already have an upgraded exhaust, the EGT's will be much lower then if you did not. My programmer came before my exhaust and I could easily reach 1250* in seconds. but after the exhaust upgrade, will take a lot longer to get even close to 1200*.
Also I would advise you to program from the lowest to the highest HP settings. That way you can feed the difference of each. I did not, and started from the highest and all the rest seemed tame compared to the top setting.
I would also advise you to do at least 1 tankfull on each setting so that you can see how much MGP gain you can get on each setting. You'll be impressed by not only getting higher HP, but also getting higher MPG (as long as you refrain from mashing down the foot pedel)
I believe that if you remove the cables to both batteries, that you can get you truck to relearn your driving habits. Leave them off for a good 10 - 15 minutes.
One addition to Kawika, when you pull your battery cables loose turn your headlights on so that it will drain any residual power in the electrical system.
