Cool hypertech programmer 3

I am not sure if I am in the right forum...I have a 2002 F350 7.3 Liter Diesel. A friend gave me a hypertech programmer 3 and when I plug the programmer into my diagnostic port, the programmer will not turn on. I plugged the programmer into my friend's 7.3 and the programmer lit right up. Please help! The 38 foot 5th wheel is getting heavier each day...

First of all put some gauges and an exhaust on that truck before even thinking of a tuner or chip. second get rid of the hypertech and get a quality tuner like a scmt or a predator. But the answer to your problem is your buddy needs to set his truck back to stock before the tuner will work in your truck. There is a memory card in the tuner that once it tunes a truck it is married to that truck only until the tune is taken out this is how the company, keeps from losing money.

No I realize the programmer was free and I do not mean to sound like a jerk (sorry) But do not blow up your 30-50 thousand dollar truck for a 300 dollar tuner, especially without the proper gauges and exhaust to tell you what your truck is doing.

No...you did not sound like a jerk. My buddy changed to a 3 setting chip and has all required gauges and exhaust, I am just looking to make it up the hills a little stronger.

Guages, intake, exhaust aside.... I think you have a dirty OBII connector or something....Even if the tuner was still married to the other vehicle, it should lite up and atleast tell you that it cannont read your truck, or something like that. Check and/or clean your port and try again. For a quick example..... Out of just curiousity, I wanted to see if my predator would read codes off my wifes Grand Cherokee.... Needless to say it wouldn't, however it lit up and informed me that it could not read the vehicle...Good luck.

Sounds like a blown fuse - the cigarette lighter circuit, I think.

We have run into this prob several times here at the shop with these tuners. Someone runs something too big in the lighter and "POP goes the fuse-el"! Then the tuner dont work....or any scan device for that matter.

As for the Hypertech tuner....i would take that "Free" tuner and sell it on eBay for the tune of $175 to $225 to another Chum----p and get you a Super Chips....you will be LOTS happier.....and i do go along with the gauge and exhaust up grades.......We will not let anything over 80HP out of our shop unless (and at the least) intake and exhaust are upgraded. (high side of the SCMT is 110-20HP IIRC) Spend the 500-1000 on the preventive upgrades before you are looking at a $7000 necessity! Especally if you tow!!

Dan is now off his soap box........

I must echo the sentiments of the other fellows on this thread. Pitch the Hypertech. They may be good for gas motors byt they don't know jack about diesels.

I can speak from experience:
"I want a Superchips 1700 SCMT."
"I'm sorry, we don't carry that brand; I reccomend Hypertech, here it is."
"Is it safe for towing and for my turbo??"
"sure is."
"ok, I'll try it"

First thing I know my pyro shot past 1200 at 2000rpm unloaded. I turned around an went back to the POS lying store and told them about this and they tried to tell me that since I had used it, it was mine. Itold them where they could go and contacted the BBB. When all was said and done, the store gave me the SCMT for less than $300, the cost of the Hypertech.

SCMT = no more problem

I made this post to personally reaffirm the sound advice of the caring persons that also responded.

Glad you found the root problem though
