Actually, the ford guys read these sites, get the users real names and addresses and enter into their database that these people have modded their trucks.
They are then blackballed at ALL Ford dealerships and denied warranty claims
If you think about it, and it came to legal action between you and Ford (obviously they want to fight you), they could do that couldn't they?
Agree this thread has gotten silly (I've laughed at some of the posts too) but seriously, people should know (especially new Ford customers) that many Ford dealers are going hard-over/stupid on warranty stuff if you've modded your scoot.
The bottom line is you're potentially taking a chance if you decide on a major mod i.e. chip/box. If folks know that, and still do it, then I don't think the individual should post like they've been slighted and/or blind-sided. Like it or not you're running a risk, each person has to decide their own tolerance level.

Personally, I wasn't aware that a "chip/box" was a major modification...seeing that every one of them is totally removable, without a physical trace.
Not a personal attack, but I have come to the conclusion that those who make blanket statements concerning tuning such as this know absolutely nothing about the basics of tuning.

You don't consider adding an aftermarket device that adds between between 50-200 rear wheel horsepower (depending on which box/chip) to the factory design/specs a major modification? Not to mention many allow for drastically higher boost pressures than stock. Also, I don't see how the fact that they're easily plugged in and removed is relevent. Name any other common/mass modification that most folks do that has the possibily of causing or contributing to added engine/transmission stress. What we're talking about here is that the vast majority of those that have lost their warranty is directly related to a dealer seeing a box/chip. There's a few isolated stories/posts about being denied for air intake and exhaust mods but again, the vast majority are aftermarket boxes.
Also, my "blanket statement" is based on years of ownership of a Cummins Diesel and watching other folks out in the TDR club have orders of magnatude more problems develop after mods like this. I can personally tell you that the vast vast majority of folks on the Cummins side that are blowing head gaskets, losing VP44 injector pumps, fuel lift pumps, stock transmissions, and melting pistons are folks with mods like we're talking about. As a newbie to the FTE my impression so far is the major difference between that board and this board is that for the most part over there the folks live by the statement/knowledge that once you modify the truck (with power upgrades) "you are your own warranty station" or at least you need to be prepared to be put in that situation if you get caught. Doesn't mean we like it or agree with what the manufacturors always do but at least there's a realistic aweness of the potential.
I'm just trying to keep it real for those folks that haven't ventured into the aftermarket up-power scene yet. If you think you can add that much HP,torque, and boost to your power train with absolutely no (potential) repercussions and then get mad if Ford doesn't want to pay for engine or transmissions repairs then I guess we just have different outlooks on it.
Take care and I appreciate the civil debate/discussion.

Unfortunately every time this topic comes up it gets ugly. So much for the silliness. Anyway, it's out of your hands now, just sit back, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. I get the feeling it's about to get bumpy.
Geeeez...I spend one stinking night away, drinking beer with my buds...and you guys go and crank the thread up without me even being here. That ain't right.
I don't think anybody here has said that unsuspecting new diesel owners should run out and mod their trucks. In fact, if anybody would care to read the many threads available on this subject they would learn that there are warranty risks involved with ding dang near anything you do to your truck.
This thread started out as a discussion about unwarranted warranty denial...then, thank goodness, it turned humorous...now we have the "you shouldn't mod or else" police ruining the whole thing.
We don't get many chances to get goofy around here anymore so let be.
Start a "don't mod or else thread" if you must but, give us a break on this one.
I just had a rep from ford look at my truck at my dealership for a smoking problem..I have a 4" cat back system, running lights, new billet oil filter cover, a ARE bed cap. The rep did notice the massive 5" exhaust tip sticking out the back of the truck which prompted him to look under the truck to see if the cat was still in....Nothing was said to me at all for the little mods i did..neither from the dealership or the rep...and they are changing a egr valve this week under warranty....My dealership service manager said i can also install a cold air intake and it will not void any warranties.....Taking the cat out will and racing the truck with a programmer or a chip will....
Find another dealer if your having problems with warranties....A door hinge ..a cap....a stereo....?????? I'd laugh at them and then call my attorney
this is my last post for this thread. FORD CAN NOT CANCEL YOUR WARRANTY FOR RUNNING A TUNER! THEY CAN ONLY DENY A CLAIM AGAINST THE WARRANTY. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Serves you right! Next time invite us all over when you have a Brewski....
My dealer is mod friendly....I doubt if my lift will void a claim on an electric window switch. Instead of buying the best deal.........you need to shop for a quality dealer when you get your next truck.

I'm kinda feeling the same way as Maximum - left out of the beer drinking and good times.
IMO the dealer plays a big part in this. From what I've seen anyway, Ford and GM are pretty similiar in the warranty claims when it comes to exhausts and intakes. Exhaust has to be cat-back and intakes are ok. Chips and tuners - NO WAY. Bigger tires - it appears Ford is a little more forgiving. Some dealers are even particular about exhaust probes - stupid.
I run a moddified vehicle but my tuner will never see the inside of a dealership even if all they are doing is changing the oil. Also I fully expect to replace my tranny if she goes before trade-in - but that's my dime and was my descion when I deceded to mod the truck.
You can look at it this way. With some of the tuners on the market it'd be like adding a blower to a similiar size gas motor - and a dealer sure wouldn't cover that motor!
