My truck is an early '99, and I don't notice any noise from the tranny on it, however, the TC may have already been replaced once as I have had it only from 65000 miles on it. Prior to me it was setup for a slide in camper.
That is great to know that the triple disc are just as quiet if not quieter. Thanks to all.
I'll be putting a sonnax kit, deeper pan w/drain and larger tranny cooler on my 97 pretty soon. Is it worth getting a new TC on an otherwise stock E4OD minus the three mods earlier mentioned?

The HD TC really payes off when towing. No slipping = less heat = longer life for transmission. If that's what you plan on doing with your truck.....then I would recommend something other than the stock TC in your future.
If you don't already have plans for them......I can't recommend more, that you get a set of gauges if your going any further with the truck and mods. If your going to tow.....at least get a tranny temp gauge. Hope this helps.

I couldn't agree more...gauges and a large tranny cooler!
Since the transmission has to be pulled to install a new torque convertor, I would suggest going to the Transgo "Tugger" kit, which will firm up your shifting very nicely. It has the ability to get you a VERY firm shift...if thats what you want, but overall keeps the shifts happening quickly, reducing heat and drag. Often a pump kit can be included as well.
Making sure the TC has a billet front cover is important as well, especially with the loads we tow these days, as the cover on a normal TC often can buldge. The stock torque convertors where just not a well made unit.

Yes, I too have got the "Tugger".....sure does wake up the tranny.
I just got done installing all my gauges this week. Do you recommend the Tugger kit more so than the Sonnax or can they work together?
The Sonnax is part of the kit. I will warn you.....if you don't feel comfortable with bringing down the main valve body, and it's associated check *****. If your not comfortable about drilling holes in said valve body. And if your not confident that you can get everything back where it belongs (check ***** mainly)......don't buy the kit. Just go with the Sonnax mod instead. Most of the "Tugger" is for down grade braking while towing. The Sonnax will firm up your shifts, and is much easier to install. And it's a great place to start.
You might want to give TransGo a call, and see if they will sell you just the accumulator valve body kit. This contains the Sonnax along with added springs for the other gears. Also ask if you can purchase their calibration plate. It goes between the accumulator body and the transmission. It controls the firmness of the shifts.
