How bad is it to hit your diff. I was talking to a local guy that 4 wheels all the time and owns a grarge he said that he always hits his diff off rocks and whatever and told me not to worry about hitting my diff. How true is this does he actually know what he is talking about.
Hitting it with what? What do you plan on doing? I am sure there are a lot of off road guys that crash the dif housings on rocks all day long. When something bends then you will have issues.
There is a difference between hitting or scrapping as you slide over something. There is also a big difference between backing up and hitting something with a Ford 9" axle or an 8.8 diff with a plastic cover in an Explorer.
It is never a good idea to hit something with your pumpkins head on, thought sliding over a rock or two on an axle housing with some steel under it (Dana 44 or 60) is not going to hurt much.
Also, it depends on what you are sliding over. I try to avoid dragging my pumpkins over things, but when you drive over a fallen tree or through mud, it is a lot easier on the truck then sliding it over a rock.
