300 Hp 302?

I plan on rebuilding my 302 in my 1989 F-150 4x4 this coming summer and either build the 302 or 351W or a 351/400Modified, and build it to about 300hp. I could easily switch the current over by removing the 3rd fuel pump,(hi pressure) and trading the intake for a carb/intake combo.

I would like any insite on this, and me and 2 other friends(mechanics) are my partners on this project.

You should be able to get more power, but I thought going to a carb/intake would be a step backwards. I guess it depends on the type of carb/intake you're planning to go with. I doubt that switching to a carb/intake will boost you to the power you're looking for. I'm not sure what you have for exhaust, but switching from stock to a free flowing exhaust will probably buy you about 30 horses, next big hitter is the heads, then the cam, then the carb/intake, then the pistons. And don't forget to lighten up everything you can like the front accessory brackets. I've seen posts of gains to electric fans of 5 to 15 hp, but I would guess around the 5 hp mark. Also, don't forget to put in a beefier ignition to keep everything sparking when it should. I recommend MSD but if I had the big bucks I would go with Jacobs.

Just my 2 cents worth,

Oh yeah, some good hp boosters on a rebuild are a crank scraper and windage tray. They are fairly reasonable in price and if you really want to, you can build your own (Hotrod has an article in a '99 issue that shows you how).

Its all stock, except it has true dual's with turbo mufflers(SHHHH!) The main reason is because of the speed density system. I have heard that you cannot run a bigger cam, with SD systems...It would cost around 600 dollars to switch to a Mass Air system...I could get a carb/intake cheaper, and get almost the same results in performance and mpgs, right?

Well, I'm told on some other boards that if your similar on your cfm between the two, that the fuel injected should gain you about 10-12% of hp over the carb because of the inherent efficienc of fuel injected systems. I really don' know if this is true, but you do have more adjustability with FI than with a carb. However, I know squat about FI and am scared to tear into my carb. I do know that your biggest HP gain is in getting the right heads and matching the cam.

I understand completely, I haven't ever done anything with engine building with the efi

I and several friends tore down a 83 302 in a 83 F-150 and rebuilt it back to factory specs, no probs there...

I just read an article in Super Ch**y tonight about converting to FI. They say the same thing, that you can get boost your hp, be more efficient, have little or no problems with change in altitude, and it really only has one moveable part; the butterfly on the intake body. However, it will not work as well with lumpier cams because of it's dependence on vacuum to pull the air and gas into the cylinder. Also, the MAP or SD FIs are more stable than the Mass Air because of fewer sensors required to feedback through the computer eliminating several variables and points of potential failure.

It would take a lot of money to make an HONEST 300 H.P. with a 302. I go to the dragstrip 8 months out of the year and can tell you the average 302 Ford is no match for what else is out there. I think you'd really feel the difference with dropping in a 351W...the weight is only 90 lbs. more and you immediatly pick up over 50 lbs. torque for even a stocker. Unless your a genius with electronics, stick with the carb...otherwise fork over the $600. and go with MASS air.
