I would think you should be able to get 150,000 out of your tranny, as long as you dont tow with it. These trannies are known for short life in a tow vehicle. I have heard that rebuilds can cost 1500-2000.00 or more. Thats why i dont mind the 10mpg from my 95 F350 with 460, c6. If maintained, I believe a c6 is good for 300,000 , even with towing use.
my 90 F150 351 had its tranny for about 130000, without the benefit of regular fluid changes... or any fluid changes for that matter. (i got it from my grandfather, who isnt that well versed in the "new" automatic transmission "fad") it cost 2400$ for a rebuild, with some rear end service (fluid/seals). Now, I have a B&N electronic shift improver on it, the guy who did my tranny believes that they do help keep temperatures down inside the tranny, therefore extending its life.
The c-6 was still available from ford up to 95 as a special order. Thats why I bought this truck used in 97 from a freind who is a parts manager at the ford dealer. He only plowed snow with the truck so it only had 11,300 miles on it. My friend then leased a 97 3/4 ton and hates it. He offered to buy mine back from me.
Everybody thinks the E4OD is some bad apple...Ok so it fails more often than other tranny's. I changed the fluid on my 93 Bronco every 15k...It lasted 167k...It's probably still going. I work for GTE in the NW. 75% of our light duty vehicles are Ford E-350's or F-350/450. The van I drive is a 91 E-350 with a 460/E4OD. It has 190k on it now and I know for a fact the trans has never been rebuilt. I tow stuff about 50% of the time. There a flatbed powerstroke's with E40D's that tow 100% of the time and have over 150k on them. Just take care of your trans...
I really believe that running synthetic transmission fluid and a good aftermarket cooler will add a lot of life to the E40D. I talked with some RV'ers who run synthetic fluid in their E40D's and they stated that they don't even follow the regular maintanence interval, but occassionally send a sample of the oil out for analysis. I have been running synthetic in mine and am curious about this too as I tow a boat and have a camper on my truck.
FYI - If you are in need of a rebuild or a replacement E40D you might want to check out Jet's
replacement E40D transmissions. According to Jet they rework the tranny and correct the factory flaws to produce an nearly bullet proof E40D.
Evan,
I have an E4OD in my F-150. I can't guarantee the same for anyone else, but I can give you my experience with it. Mine went 178,000 miles with little maintenance. Then I blew up my motor. While the truck was apart, I had the bright idea to have my tranny rebuilt, though it was still running decently. I had been given a large amount of money to cover the repairs on my truck- enough to cover engine and tranny, so I went ahead and did it, just so I wouldn't have to pull all that out again later (Oh, to be stupid again...). As I recall, the bill on the tranny was just short of a grand.
The short of it- in 178,000 miles I changed the filter once (again I say, oh, to be stupid...) My truck now has 220,000 on it and the tranny is fine (40k on rebuild). I tow a boat regularly. Sure, its mushy, but its not a performance sports car. It's a truck.

you can purchase the Jet prepped E4ODs from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers 800-421-1050. They have a very good reputation, but are a bit pricey $2600 or - . A Trans Commander from Banks is also a good consideration I am currently running one in my 91 F250 / 460(recently rebuilt and modified E4OD). They produce much crisper shifts but not over jerky down shifts,(less torque converter slippage = less heat produced). They go for about $250 and install in about an hour.

I found this old thread wondering how much longer my E4OD was going to last. I have a 94 f150 4x4 w/ 351W and the E4OD transmission has now gone over 200K miles with fairly regular fluid change intervals between 15K and 30K. It has acted up periodically recently where it would want to stay in first gear to long and then shift hard. I switched to synthetic fluid and that seemed to fix that problem for now and everything is working good.
I did some hard towing with it a few years back when I was using my truck to pull an enclosed car trailer w/ race car and gear to the drag races on the weekends. I've since sold that whole set up but I know that had to effect the life of the transmission as I was definitely overloading the truck.
I always thought that the E4OD was basically a C6 with an overdrive.
When the E4OD was first released, it had problems. Through the years Ford upgraded some of the internal parts, to where toward the end of it's production run, it was a decent tranny. I believe 1995 and later trannies have most of the upgrades.
I have heard the best deal with all the upgrades already installed are rebuilt E4OD's that you can buy from the Ford dealer.
I have a '93 Bronco with the 5.0 and E40D. I was curious as to what a good rebuild kit is and also if they have step-by-step guides on how to do it. One more thing; how long does it usually take to do it? (and yes I am pretty mechanically inclined.)
